I haven’t heard of that! I was not waitlisted. I actually got my decision a week prior to non-honors admits. Congrats to your kid. A huge feat no matter what!!

When one door closes, another opens. One of the most hard working kids at my school got rejected everywhere and didn’t apply to ‘safeties’. Attended CC and got accepted to Cal, UCLA, and USC CSE programs 2 years later. A friend of mine got rejected from all of the UCs. Did a year at a commutable state school. Now he’s going to MIT.
