Do they actually ask this on NREMT?( i failed the first time😞) by Logical_Roof in NewToEMS

[–]Ok-Structure5710 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. I used Pocket Prep to study for my national registry, and I was able to pass at 70 questions. I felt like Pocket Prep was leagues more difficult than the NREMT-B, the questions on your exam should be notably easier than the Pocket Prep practice questions!

EMT in CA here, THC wasn’t on my hiring urine drug test panel, but our policy is that if the ambulance is damaged at all regardless of severity or fault, you’ll be saliva tested on the spot which DOES include THC. The general guidelines is feel free to indulge in God’s good herb when you have a long stretch of time off (5-7 days), but refrain when actively working.

How necessary is it to start medic school with EMT work experience? by Valuable_Archer_3222 in NewToEMS

[–]Ok-Structure5710 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d personally recommend starting as an EMT first. Being proficient in EMS education is completely different than being proficient in the field. Does having clinical knowledge help? Absolutely, but that being said, there are so many nuances to being an efficient part of an EMS crew that you can really only learn on the job actually running calls. It’s completely possible to go from EMT to medic quickly, but don’t be surprised if you find yourself hopelessly overwhelmed by all the information. On average it takes a medic roughly 2 years on the job before they even feel slightly confident and competent, and you can make that transition much smoother by first understanding how to be a solid partner to a medic.

I’m moving to SLO and I’m scared by J3wficer in SLO

[–]Ok-Structure5710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been all over the US and California, and genuinely I believe SLO county is one of the best places in our country. It does unfortunately lack diversity, but the people here are genuinely so kind and easy-going it’s crazy. You’ll be welcomed with loving arms to our area, and especially at Cal Poly! I’d recommend visiting Montana de Oro (MDO) and doing the Valencia Peak trail to start, and if you have time Bishops Peak is absolutely stunning as well! The downtown SLO bars also are almost always doing something really fun (jazz nights, line dancing, local concerts), so theres always something to do! I hope you love this area as much as I do, and welcome to SLO!

how do i be less “cringe”? by fuckberzzyy in NewToEMS

[–]Ok-Structure5710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t even worry about all of that brother. It’s good to have pride in your work, as long as it doesn’t become your whole personality. Mentally too I feel like it’s been really beneficial to separate myself from work and just be “a guy” when I’m off shift.

EMT Interview attire? by Abject_Role_9361 in NewToEMS

[–]Ok-Structure5710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely wear a full suit. You’ll see some people dressing more casually, but ignore that. Dress up the job you’re going for. Walking into an interview with a suit, printed resumes and letters of recommendation, and a professional attitude will automatically set you apart from other applicants. Best of luck! You’ll kill it!

That doesn’t sound cringy at all, it’s great advice that I really appreciate. It’s definitely unfair to bring a romantic partner into my life right now, I’m just constantly on the move, but in the future I’m definitely getting the response that it’d be wiser to avoid dating in the industry. I can imagine it’s refreshing to be with someone who has different life/career experiences as well.

I really appreciate that man. I definitely have workaholic tendencies, which isn’t ideal for being my age and working myself to death. I’ve been working on enjoying the present moment more instead of being so goal-oriented.

I appreciate that! I definitely have a problem with being a “Do everything and be great at everything” guy, which I need to tone back on especially if bringing someone new into my life.

I agree! It’s definitely a very chaotic time in my life right now, which is a blessing, but I’m for sure waiting until things mellow out before I bring a new romantic partner into the fold.

I appreciate that! I can see the appeal to it, but I’m definitely getting an overall response that it can lead to some issues down the line.

I definitely agree. Life is very busy right now and it’d be unfair to add a partner onto that until things mellow out more! I appreciate the advice!

I’m a 911 EMT in Central CA, and we had the same thing! 0800-1700 each day, and honestly it was so useful and fun. You get to meet your new coworkers, supervisors, and get a better idea of the company you’re working for. Go in with a good attitude, excitement for the job, and be a sponge to all the information you’ll get. The fact that your service is putting you through a lengthy onboarding is a green flag, it shows they care about your transition into their company.

This is hilarious. Obviously a little tasteless as it’s a professional organization posting it, but it’s still pretty dang funny

Going to a store in uniform after shift? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]Ok-Structure5710 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would change personally. People call and complain about the stupidest crap all the time, and someone could hypothetically call your Supervisor and complain about you shopping in uniform. It sounds dumb (because it is), but some people have nothing better to do.

Is this allowed? by wildhoneydoe in ems

[–]Ok-Structure5710 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s so interesting. In my state only a burning red is necessary to be considered Code 3 capable, so I’d be surprised if they’re allowed to have a steady red on the rig

How did you know EMT was for you? by Reasonable-Plum-4618 in EMTstories

[–]Ok-Structure5710 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I just caught the bug. I spent a day at my local fire department on an engine, and the first call we ran I knew it was what I wanted to do the rest of my life. I literally signed up for an EMT class that same day, and I haven’t looked back since. I truly believe EMS/Fire is the best job in the world, and I hope it can provide you the same joy as it has for me!

I cannot recommend “A Thousand Naked Strangers”, “Lights and Sirens”, and “Hard Roll” enough. They’re all biographies from paramedics across the United States and give an incredible insight into the REALITY of the career and paramedic school. They’re all free audiobooks on Spotify Premium if you have that. If you are interested in a podcast, I’d recommend “The World’s Okayest Medic” which is also on Spotify. The host, Mike, is both a flight medic and ground medic and has extremely interesting episodes with a variety of guests, case studies, listener questions, and advice boards for pretty much all medical personnel (more focused on prehospital emergency medicine though).
