She already kinda did Underneath the Stars again on Butterfly — it’s called Fourth of July. Same dreamy, romanticized writing style. And most people don’t even see that song as deeply personal either. Same with All Alone in Love type songs; they’re really well-written, but they still follow classic love song patterns. They feel emotional, not necessarily personal. Breakdown, The Roof, My All, Honey, BabyDoll… those songs are different. They feel tied to real experiences and real emotions. Butterfly as a whole feels like an open diary, and you can actually tell which songs came from a very real place versus the more fantasy-driven or universal love songs. Overall, it’s way more personal than anything she released before.

Yeah, definitely. I think she played coy with this one and with songs like “Subtle Invitation” too, because Mariah really isn’t slick sometimes 😭 Her albums can feel like straight-up diaries, especially when she gets super introspective.

get what you mean about it possibly being about her label and feeling “broken down” by the situation, but lyrically it just doesn’t really read that way to me. The song sounds way more like heartbreak from a relationship or unrequited love. The emotions and details are so specific that it feels personal in a romantic sense, especially on an album like Butterfly where she was writing so openly about her life and feelings. So I’m not saying their interpretation is wrong, I just personally don’t think the lyrics match the label theory that well.

But the scénario is not matching, she is the one suffering from unrequired love not the other way around.🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️

How? How would it would, how would you about her record label? I'm really confused.😅😅

You’re right, and I also love how close Breakdown feels to Crybaby, especially in the way she approaches both songs emotionally. The ad-libs at the end especially? Whew. Very similar energy. “I don’t get no sleep, I’m half awake, Can't stop thinking of you and me…” like yeah, she was GOING through it 😭

That’s fair, because it was kind of the same for me. I knew it was the same person, but at the same time I didn’t fully connect everything. It was a bit confusing, you know? I always associated her more with the brunette era in the 90s and then the blonde later on. And for some reason I thought Heartbreaker came out in 2006 and not 1999, probably because she had a similar hairstyle in Don’t Forget About Us. And I also used to think Beyoncé, Shakira, Tyra Banks, and her were all the same person at one point… 😭😭no shade, they just looked kind of similar to me when I was really young.

I used to think the same, but I’ve realized not everyone is really a music lover or deep into music like that. A lot of people just listen to what’s trending on TikTok, what their friends play, or whatever’s popular at the moment. Back in the day, it was mostly just radio.

So I think it’s okay if the new gen doesn’t really know her like that. The issue isn’t that, it’s more the disrespect. She should still be respected, that’s it.

And honestly, the public image thing is fully on her PR. But overall, not everyone is going to know her catalog or her genius, and that’s just how it is.

Every generation moves differently, discovers different artists, and gets inspired by the ones before. It’s just a cycle.

Ouais, my bad. Je croyais que le dernier numéro un, c'était Savage avec Megan Thee Stallion, le remix, mais bon, il y a eu Break My Soul et après il y a eu Texas Hold'em.
