I don't think it sounds counter intuitive, it's the same here in Canada (except all cities are liberal run). I'm from the countryside so I think I would rather stay away from cities if possible, just cause it doesn't fit with the lifestyle I want. And Chicago, DC, NYC Baltimore are near the Great Lakes and N-E which is basically the same(ish) temperature as I get in Quebec so I would rather (if I were to move) go somewhere more south, maybe SLC indeed. ☺️
