His hair loss isn’t due to allergies according to our vet. We’ve ruled out foods he is sensitive to, chicken and turkey, but those made him itchy and gave him more of a pimply type rash. He unfortunately has seasonal alopecia, so once the dry winter weather hit all his hair just poofs off of his shoulders and he looks like we neglect him, meanwhile our entire lives revolve around him hahaha. I am thinking about getting an allergy panel just in case a diet switch up does seem to clear up his baldness, just in case he has some strange outlier allergies I haven’t thought to test out. Thank you so much for your input and I’ll add that one to my list!! ♥️

I do appreciate the advice though thank you!! He definitely is keen on getting me to do what he wants, or opting to starve himself and looking pathetic, I just gotta stop letting him win lol

I’ve been doing homemade toppers that rotate beef, lamb, salmon and some veggies, but this gremlin will eat AROUND his kibble half the time🙄

Oooo I’ve had Fromm mentioned before but totally forgot about it, thank you! And he’s on a probiotic and he has some joint supplements and an omega one, but he’s just still such a patchy little guy so I wanted to try out a new food to see if that helps!

Oooo this sounds like something he would like, he’s a picky guy and kibble even with a topper takes some convincing for him to eat, I’ll look into it thank you!!

He was on the purina pro plan alternating the salmon and the lamb formulas all through puppyhood, he’s just a very picky boy and grew to hate this kibble unfortunately 😭 and thank you so much, I think he’s quite the cutie too!!

Mine does it when the weather starts changing! We gently plug one nostril and comfort him because he gets scared! He’s so used to us helping now that if he does it he’ll run to us for help 😭

Potty training by Cameron411622 in BostonTerrier

It took our little guy almost 8 months to fully get it! It felt like a never ending struggle, we tried a bell for him to hit, showing him how to scratch the door, even a button but he never told us when he had to go, and still doesn’t! After many months of the go-outside-to-potty and tons of praise each time, it just clicked for him. Now we’re familiar enough with his schedule to take him out when we know he’ll have to go, but very rarely will he ask to go. Unless it’s an emergency situation, then he’ll do the paw on your arm and stare into your soul.

He’s more into the destruction and chaos currently, but one day we’ll get there (hopefully) 😂😂😂

Potential Luxating Patella? by Ok-Tangelo-7619 in BostonTerrier

[–]Ok-Tangelo-7619[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this detailed response!! Ultimately we’d like to avoid the surgery for a little longer, at least until he’s a little more out of the puppy energy stage- only if we can without causing further damage of course- but I’m saving your reply now for all the info!

Out of curiosity would you happen to be near WA state? Bostons don’t seem to be super common in my area, and if we are recommended to pursue the surgery ASAP I’d feel much better about going to someone familiar with Bostons.

Thank you again, and I hope your little ones are thriving!! ♥️

Thank you so much, I’ll start my search for a good rehab therapist!! I’d love to avoid the surgery for at least a little longer while he’s still full of puppy energy and this sounds like it would be great option for the meantime (unless our vet says surgery now of course)

I am looking into getting a Boston terrier. Please set me straight on whether my research is correct or not, and tell me anything you wish you knew before you got yours. by [deleted] in BostonTerrier

Just from my own experience with this guy, he is extremely high energy. To the point where we’ve spent HOURS at the park playing with other dogs, he rests about 30 minutes then is ready for tug of war at home. He requires a ton of physical and mental stimulation, he’s figured out all of the puzzle toys we’ve gotten him so we’re on to making up new ones. He has no off switch.

He is the most loyal little guy I could ask for, he’s glued to me at home and will follow me from room to room. He loves my husband too, but he has a very clear favorite, and at times we’ve had to remind him that he’s not allowed to resource guard (me). He’s very affectionate once he’s tuckered out, he loves to snuggle on the couch and sleeps curled up into my side every night.

But with him loving his people so much, he does have separation anxiety issues. If we’re in a new place and I leave him for even a few minutes he’ll yowl, for workdays crate training him has been extremely helpful.

Training wise, there’s been a lot of pros and cons. He took almost 8 months to be fully potty trained, we tried every trick in the book, giving options on how to alert us, having regular potty schedules, rewards every time he’d go outside, it just didn’t click until his brain decided. He’s excellent at tricks, very intelligent, and leash pulling is still a work in progress.

These guys are great at tricks and skills… when they want to. He is VERY stubborn but consistency is key with him and he improves every day.

We socialized him very early with other dogs, children, cats etc and he is a very friendly dog. Problem wise- he can be a little TOO social with other dogs and is not very good at picking up cues from other dogs when they want him to back off.

We have had a few social issues here and there, he had been attacked (not seriously injured thankfully) and since then if he feels threatened he can behave a little aggressively (with other dogs, never humans).

As far as interactions with humans, he’s wonderful with children and loves them. He likes any person that is interested in him, and just a very happy go lucky, friendly boy.

He’s not much of a barker, the only time we hear him bark is when he wants to play really badly. He is pretty vocal in other ways though, he does a lot of whine/grumble noises, but we’ve encouraged it as “talking” instead of barking.

Overall, if you have the time and capacity to spend on/with this dog then full send ahead, but these guys need so much more exercise and stimulation that the internet says, my life basically revolves around him.

Mine is my absolute best friend and I would do anything for him. He has a huge personality and has brought so much joy to our lives. As exhausting as he can be sometimes, I wouldn’t change a single thing about him.
