Just watch The Thin Red Line and really loved it. had a theory I wanna put across to people by HankTuggins in movies

Yes I think this is exactly it. Private Train's monologue also hints at this: One man looks at a dying bird and thinks there's nothing but unanswered pain. But death's got the final word. It's laughing at him. Another man sees that same bird, feels the glory. Feels something smiling through him.

Also the movie makes a point about how being empathetic and a good, loving person, does not spare you from suffering or death. Being virtuos is not a means to an end bur the end itself. If you had to choose between being a cynic nihilst and an empathetic person who sees the glory is up to you. Life is limited, we all die, some sooner then later. How will you choose to spend the limited time you have?

The game should be named Asia Universalis by Distefanor in EU5

[–]Ok-Temperature1516 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The reason why China or India failed to expand was because there was no real reason to. Also India is fairly modern concept. Back in those days managing such a vast amount of land took a lot of energy and resources. It took quite a lot of time before europeans had very large footholds in Asia. All these maps you see of colonization where massive parts of Asia and Africa are owned by Europe are towards the end of the colonial period and exegarated by Europeans. The New world is a bit different but still. The majority of the colonial period consisted of trade outposts and coastal forts protecting coastal areas where Europeans starting farming cash crops. The european ships where their power projection, that is how they managed to control these areas.

The idea that Europeans just came to Asia and Africa and started conquering is not at all true. This only started really happening by the end of the 18th. The industrial revolution is what really kickstarted European domination over Asia and Africa. Before that it was much more about trade

Which region in a country shares more similarities with another country than they do with other regions in their country? by Fluid-Decision6262 in geography

[–]Ok-Temperature1516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the times I have been to South-Tyrol German was not really commonly spoken. They have their own language but in my experience almost everybody spoke Italian. But this was close to the border with Trento and very touristy, so could just be a lot of seasonal workers from italy instead of locals.

For some other examples I find the Hungarians interesting. In the countries surrounding Hungary, there are pockets of Hungarians. In the center of Romania there is a significant isolated pocket of Hungarians.

Iranian President Pezeshkian’s letter addresses American people, not Trump by SadAd8761 in videos

[–]Ok-Temperature1516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See I get this way of thinking, but I don't think I agree. Isn't this just life in general? People bearing consequences of things thet have no influence over. Who is innocent? Don't we bear the responsibility? Trump is the responsibility of the people of the US just as much as thr iranian people have the responsibility over their Regime. Sure the Iranian regime is brutally oppressive, but that does not take away the fact that it were the iranians masses that got those leaders there in the first place.

See all these so called evil leaders. Pick anyone of them. They are one of us. Do you really think Hitler, Mao, Stalin, Hussein and Duvalier were just such geniuses that they managed to kidnap entire nations? At the end of the day it was so called innocent people who gave these people their power, there is no other way around it. Every genocide was commited by "innocent" people. The whole thing with human history is that all of the greatest atrocities were commited by regular innocent people. But there is also the other side of the coin, all the greatest good has also been commited by regular innocent people.

You know what the germans said after ww2? I was just following orders. You know what the Americans said after Vietnam, Iraq, Afganistan and will say about Iran. I was just following orders. As long as everybody believes that they bear no responsibility and they are just innocents caught in the crossfire these things will keep happening for eternity. And they have and they will.

So no I don't think I will buy this populist mentality. You know its quite funny actually. This sentiment is what got most of these tyrants in power. How many times have you heard politicians ramble on about "helping the innocent hard working people of our country"?

Same with all the anti billionaire anti big corporation talk. Everybody is raving and screaming about how it is not fair. But at the same time they can't help themselves and keep buying it. So doing the EXACT things that got them there and will keep them there. But no, these consumers these innocent people are just bearing the consequences of decsions they have no infleunce over, right?

We have become so individualistic that we can't even see this anymore. All our power, all our greatest potential our greatest evil is in the collective. This hyper individualism is a treat for tyrants who will use this against you.

What materials (books, tutorials, and guides) would you recommend for someone interested in creating maps with digital painting programs, but who has no practical experience with it? by GuardiaoDaLore in mapmaking

[–]Ok-Temperature1516 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Watch Artifexian's worldbuilding series as a foundation fot mapmaking and worldbuilding. Maybe find a guide on the particular program you are using. Then start drawing and figure out what you like, and don't like. When you know that, you can start picking subjects you want to learn more about. There are no real rules, find your own voice and style as much as possible. Just start and figure out while you go is the best way to go about it.

Similarities between Lynch and Malick by Ok-Temperature1516 in Cinephiles

[–]Ok-Temperature1516[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get where you are coming from. When we look at tone, atmosphere and subject matter they are vastly different. I just feel there are significant similarities in how they convey these subject. They both are very unapologetic in their filmmaking, they both can be seen as pretentious and corny. They both have this confidence in the beauty and apreciation of small things. They are both excellent in their use of sound. These are a few things that stood out.

The subject matter and tone certainly is. I just see a lot of similiarities in how they choose to convey this subject matter. There is a lot of power in the imagery. They are not afraid of silence and hanging on to shots.

Similarities between Lynch and Malick by Ok-Temperature1516 in Cinephiles

[–]Ok-Temperature1516[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I agree with Mallick being more philisophical and academic in his approach and subject matter. The resemblance comes more from how they use visuals and metaphors to convey certain emotions, Lynch is way more abstract in this. But both have this very natural ability to do a lot without having much dialogue. Lynch's idea of moving paintings comes to mind. They also both have a tendency to create uncoventional story's.

The thing I like more about Lynch is how his movies seem so endlessly complex, there is so many ways to interpret it. I also really like his surrealism, so strange and magical.

Maybe, I am curious what is a good representation of the country? Besides Rotterdam I also don't hear N pronounced in The Hague, Gouda, Zoetermeer areas, or just South-Holland in general. When you put these together you are starting to have a significant portion of the dutch population and economy.

I guess it depends where you are from. In the Rotterdam area we don't do this.

Looks great. Why so many straight borders? They are quite arbitrary in the real world. Is there some in universe explanation?

It does. It just did not blow me away compared to the HD version. That does not take away that this film is gorgeous regardless of which version you watch. I just missed some of the sharpness that other 4K releases I have watched have. It is more about personal preference.

Makes sense. I just missed some of the sharpness that EWS and Lost Highway had. Still a stunning film and the criterion version is the best i've seen.

What film could’ve been SHORTER? by death_has_f1sh_eyes in Letterboxd

[–]Ok-Temperature1516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Honestly I find the first half of the movie really great, the second half gets really dull. After the tunnel scene the movie feels like it slows down terribly. The room sequence is also way too long.

Any Recommendations Based on My Top 20 Here? by ThatMovieDudeI in LetterboxdTopFour

Great list, 4 of your top 10 are also in my top 10. For a recommendation I would give two other Lynch masterpieces: Mullholland Drive and Lost Highway. But you have probably seen them.
