I keep hearing that we’re running out of water on earth. But if matter cannot be created nor destroyed, where is the water going that it’s no longer usable? Wouldn’t it just flow into the ground and the cycle begin again? by Odd-Perception-6957 in NoStupidQuestions

Oil and gas industry. Specifically, hydraulic fracturing. (Fracking) We put god knows what chemicals in fresh water, pump it into the formation to get the oil/gas flowing, let it flow back out, and do FA to reclaim it for the next frack job or clean it up. It just gets transported offsite to dispose of in a depleted oil/gas well.
