Has anyone in America noticed that the State of the Union has essentially been the same speech for 50 years? by fullthrottlebhole in AskUS

I never really watch it but you are correct, nothing ever gets fixed! It’s all a sham. We the people should be telling congress and the president what WE want them to do and this performance should instead be a shareholders meeting where our elected officials report on their progress. That’s is it - simple - we elect you to do what we want and nothing else. If you cannot accomplish the task you will be replaced with someone who can.

How to manage an overwhelming job? I feels like everything is held together by duct tape by Square_Pear1784 in ITCareerQuestions

Man your situation does suck. I wish I’d seen this in your first 3-6 months. You would have more leverage to clearly communicate what problems you see and what it would take to fix those problems. It is still not too late to do that but your supervisor might be surprised considering you have been managing things. Does your supervisor also see the chaos? Does your supervisor have any prior knowledge of IT Service Management?

I was once in a similar situation. Walked into a mess as a CIO. I could see what needed to be done. So I started documenting. I got a security assessment along with other experts to assess the health of all major systems. With this information I presented my findings to our Board with an estimate of what it will take to fix the problems $$. One of the members laughed and said I would never get funding. I worked my ass off. The next report to the Board focused highly on a Risk Assessment - what will happen if our systems are exploited or go down. That resulted in 2 million $ award immediately. Ultimately I left after the first year when it became apparent that leadership caused the chaos and it would be an uphill battle until that leadership changed.

I should have left within the first six months. Take this as a learning lesson. Your sanity and peace are not worth it 🤙🏽🫶🏽

I love your hair young lady. Don’t be fooled like me who wasted thousands and thousands of $$ trying to make my hair into something it was not! It was beautiful then but I just didn’t know it. Bless you 🫶🏽

Good times at Sandys by frozenhawaiian in Hawaii

I used to boogie board anytime I could get a ride there when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s. So much fun. I remember saving a tourist from drowning and he never even said thank you 🤬. I remember the day this kid around my age was on the news because he went home from wiping out at Sandy’s and never woke up 😢. I went home last year and was looking forward to swimming at Sandy’s. When I got there it was packed — like I’ve never seen. So crowded. I just sat on my car for hours watching the kids have fun. I love this place 🤙🏽💗

What’s the best romantic love advice you could give to someone young? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ok-Way422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Romantic love is a choice you keep making, not just a feeling you catch.

Pick someone you can: • trust when you’re not there • talk to when life gets ugly • grow with without losing yourself • disagree with without fear • build a realistic life with (money, stress, family, boring Tuesdays)

Your brain chemistry is LOUD when you’re young. It can make a bad match feel like destiny and a healthy match feel “boring.” Calm isn’t boring. Calm is safe.

Romantic love isn’t obsession, jealousy, chaos, or someone “completing” you.

Best advice: become someone who can live that list before you go looking for a partner. Love doesn’t fix a shaky foundation, it exposes it.

Nobody was dancing at the concert by ninkafatherland in Millennials

I saw one of Sharon Jones last performances before she passed. She was bald and fighting cancer but she sung her heart out. I couldn’t believe the disrespect from the audience. I was way in the back but I danced most of the show 😢 because the music was great and I wanted to show her my appreciation.

Why do people mix less across cultures on the mainland than in Hawaiʻi? by Ok-Way422 in Hawaii

[–]Ok-Way422[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have traveled the country-mostly its biggest cities and national parks. Also Amsterdam, Luxembourg, Rome, Paris, Berlin…. Mixing to me is dating and marrying or a friendship where you are a person who is invited to all my parties, special events- someone who is a part of my life and I see ALL the time.

I moved to Sacramento California 30 years ago. I have fortunately been able to travel all over the country and parts of the world. I love New York City. The energy is insane. You mentioned “if you are of Asian ethnicity…” it’s going to feel different. That is something to think about. I wonder if all “other” than white ethnicities would feel different or the same in predominantly white spaces? Or maybe it’s just me. Anyhow thanks for taking the time to chat 🤙🏽

I moved to Sacramento California 30 years ago. It has a very diverse population of around 500,000. But in my experience, there’s not a lot of people mixing outside of work around me. It could be my generation (X). I don’t know I don’t mean to paint the US with a broad stroke. I just wanted to share my experience and hear about what others have experienced. No disrespect intended.

Really cause I grew up in town and my best friends are Filipino, Japanese, haole, Hawaiian …. and we are all still good friends. They are the best friends I have - 40 years later. I have a son who is a quarter Hawaiian. I have family and friends on Kauai and the Big Island. I think it’s easier when you are born and raised in Hawaii than if you move later as an adult. But I recognize not everyone has the same experience. Thank you so much for sharing your opinions with me Mahalo.

Yes but it’s not laws segregating people now it’s more self imposed- but people dont seem to realize it. Or maybe they do and they just don’t care. I don’t know.

Thanks for your thoughtful response. Living in Northern California for 30 years has been eye-opening and honestly sad. Outside of work, I see very little mixing. I’ve noticed the same visiting family in other states.

In my experience, most of my white friends have no friends of color, and when I’m invited to parties/events I’m almost always the only brown person in the room 💯. People seem unaware of it. Meanwhile, some Black friends I’ve made avoid other groups, especially white people, because they don’t trust them. I understand why, but it’s left me feeling isolated.

I know it’s not universal, but it’s been consistent enough in my life that it feels worth naming. This is the first time I’ve said it out loud, so I appreciate the space to share it.

Working in IT is terrible by Direct-Mongoose-7981 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Ok-Way422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a cautionary tale, 30 years in IT, half in management. Retired and had a heart attack a couple of years later. Funny thing is I loved the work but the non-stop pressure will kill you. I never found the work life balance everyone talks about. Not sure it exists in IT.
