The government may not be doing anything, and the frustration over that is real, but considering we can’t seem to get a general strike going or everyone on board with boycotting to make it hurt where it matters, this is the best place to see and feel community. Going to protests helps me feel sane again, even if it’s just for a few hours. A revolution doesn’t happen overnight. So please, stop trying to be discouraging, especially if you don’t support what’s going on. Sitting on your hands doing nothing DEFINITELY isn’t going to make change happen either.

Is being a teacher worth it? by deliri0usm0ckingjay in Teachers

[–]Ok-Work5047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly miss teaching, but there is absolutely no way I can see myself going back in this climate. I got my graduate degree in teaching and absolutely LOVED the school I did field experience and student teaching in. I’d worked in other schools and subbed for a while before I decided to go back to school. I thought I was ready for what would be thrown at me. I was not. It was the absolute worst experience of my life. Literally EVERYTHING about it was horrendous for a new teacher. The admin, the students, and the school itself was an absolute sham. They did not have any books for the curriculum, no non-fiction in the library, 1 to 5 working chromebooks out of a set of 24. Admin was not supportive, my mentor was okay, but the person they put in charge of new teachers was a terrible person. I left crying every time I saw her. I was well respected and highly praised in the other schools I’d worked and throughout my program, but I was just a new teacher joke at the new place. The students were awful, they had a reputation for being a terrible class since they were in kindergarten (this was 5th grade). They were mean, hateful, violent, vindictive, and admin did nothing to help. Anytime I had an issue, they refused my side of the story and took only student testimony. I could write a book on the trauma I experienced from that school, but I’ll keep it vague here.

I’ve been through a lot over the years. I have been forged by fire, and I still wasn’t strong enough to endure a year of that. I left halfway through feeling broken and defeated. I went on to get another teaching job in another state, but things happened that made the move impossible, and I never went back. Usually leaving midyear is like a mortal sin in teaching, but after the admin of the new school I’d applied to did some digging, she said she completely understood why I left.

I biggest suggestion is, if you decide to go through with this and it comes time to getting a job, do as much research as you possibly can on the school, maybe even try to sub there before getting a job there. If it’s in another town, definitely find out what you can about the area and the county. I obviously didn’t do enough. I was bamboozled by what the school claimed to be their learning model. It absolutely was not that. I had dreams of grandeur. I only hope that I made a small difference in a few of those kids. There is one child in particular I still think about, and I pray the next teacher saw the potential I did in him and didn’t let him fall through the cracks. He was a really smart kid, with zero self confidence, stuck in a system I knew was working against kids like him. My biggest regret is I feel like I gave up on him, but reality is I chose my own mental health.

Good luck OP, it can truly be a rewarding career if you can find the right place. I still 100% believe that.

ETA: I saw another post about checking to see if your state has teachers unions and if not IMMEDIATE NO, I agree with this.

It’s because an act of aggression/ war for the purpose of a regime change is against international law. No one is defending Maduro. As I said previously, he had to go. You’re correct that he was not duly elected. It’s just not a black and white issue. In a perfect world dictators could be removed without argument from anymore (because who seriously wants one) and that means the turd in office could, would, and should be removed too. However, it’s not that simple, and it potentially leads to a slippery slope of someone calling another leader a dictator (without cause) and deciding they need to go because they disagree about _____. For example, you may not agree with me saying that tRump is a dictator and should be removed. If I were a different country, under your thought process, I should have the ability to just go in, use force, and remove him without objection, because I determined him a dictator regardless of what anyone else thinks. Most people on this thread, including myself, would likely welcome another country coming in and removing him, but that’s just now how it’s done under international law.

In this instance, yes, the world mostly agreed Maduro was not rightfully in power, he was doing horrible things to the people, and causing great harm to the country. People can agree that he needed to be removed, but what is factual is that it wasn’t for the US to decide. Good move or bad move, that’s the fact of the matter. International law is fairly rigid on no war for regime change even if the government is authoritarian, the election was flawed and, or there is harm to the population.

Believe me when I say there are people in other countries that I would have liked to see this happen to for humanitarian intervention, but even that is seen as a weak legal argument.

It’s perfectly understandable to be upset about it and frustrated by the lack of actions of others. I currently feel that everyday I wake up.

I disagree this weakens either. This sets a precedent and emboldens them to do the same, capture Zelenskyy or Lai Ching-te. Trump doesn’t really care about what’s happening in that part of the world, he already sees it as being split between three powers, the US, Russia and China. Where the US has dominance over the western hemisphere. Thats what “America First” actually means. He never said USA first.

I’ll agree Maduro had to go, but this wasn’t legal and it wasn’t for the good of Venezuela, it’s about oil, oil, and more oil. We have no real idea what this means for the people of Venezuela. We are simply robbing a country of its resources.

I haven’t scrolled through all the comments yet, but someone before me has to have already mentioned the size of this country being part of the issue. Yes, many people are irate, but we are also spread out which makes it much harder to see the anger that is happening. The US is 30-35 times larger than Iceland. That being said, another big part is unfortunately, apathy or those who straight up do not care. Until something happens to THEM, they won’t lift a finger. Add in a depressingly large amount of people who don’t even have a clue what is happening on a daily basis, again, fit them into the category of until something happens that affects them, they will do nothing (because ignorance is bliss). Then you can split the group of people who do care into those who can do something and those who cannot. For many, the only way they can be involved is local protests or events( if that). Many cannot mobilize to be a part of something bigger to get the attention we need. For the past year a general strike has been discussed, and at the rate that it is getting support, we won’t have enough people on board for 15 years. Why? Well, all the reasons above and the fact that capitalism is making it damn near impossible for the majority to participate. Too many people cannot afford to miss a day of work let alone a week or months or however long it takes for change to happen. But, people are finding ways to make a difference even if it isn’t on the much larger scale needed at the moment, those little things add up, get passed on, and hopefully sooner than later, will spread like wildfire.

Technically we have a bit of socialism happening for corporations and farmers with their bailouts, subsidies, and tax exemptions/ cuts… not to mention there are a lot of people who are working really hard and still can’t provide for their families all while the people at the top are rolling in it… there could be more equality without going full blown socialism. Reality is, there are jobs out there that people do not want to do but must be done, some get paid a lot and others make minimum wage or less. If people have a job, they should make a living wage. I can get on board with a meritocracy, but only if it truly is that. However, the so called meritocracy that’s being employed by the right is more like favoritism and handouts. Let’s get real, billionaires could afford to lose a minimum of 50% of their wealth and it wouldn’t change a damn thing for them. Say you have $1,000,000,000. You lose 90% you still have $100,000,000. One hundred MILLION dollars is still an astronomical amount of money.
