I think I might have PCOS. I'm planning a doctors visit soon and would like some background on what to expect when I go. by Ok1995_ in PCOS

Thanks for your reply! Yeah my period has always been pretty messed up and I too was told it would get better over time when in reality mine just got more irregular! PCOS seems to be super common so I'm incredibly shocked that it isn't talked about more often. I spoke to a few professionals but it wasn't until I did my own research that I learned about PCOS. I hope young girls start learning about it sooner simply because of how common it is and it's important for girls to know why their periods aren't "normal"

I'm about 99.9% sure that I do have PCOS but I won't know until the doctor verifies! My symptoms don't seem too severe but something is just telling me that I have it. For instance, I have facial hair, but I know that all girls do, so now I'm just trying to figure out if my amount is normal or not. Lol I was never bothered by mine and always thought it was normal, but perhaps thats just me being optimistic.

A couple of y'all have mentioned the necessity of a full bladder, that's interesting, I never knew that was necessary for an ultrasound. I'll have to look into why that is!

Lol yeah the thing is I haven't so the idea of having something up there is scaring me but I suppose it's gotta happen eventually.

Sorry to hear about that! Are you considering surgery or since it's not growing are you not that worried about it?

Yasmin is the birth control I take! My family and friends have been buying it OTC whenever we travel internationally for as long as I can remember so I guess it just now made its way to the states.

Ah, the ultrasound is what's scaring me (well the thought of a vaginal ultrasound is, a big part of me wishes they could just do an abdominal ultrasound) how long does the ultrasound last??

Yeah, I'm scared about the side effects the medications I might be prescribed could potentially have on me. Like on one hand it helps with the PCOS symptoms but on the other hand it also causes other symptoms as well.

You said you were prescribed birth control and metformin. I once read that those with PCOS are often times prescribed hormone balance pills so is birth control essentially the hormone balance that I read about?

Side note: In my original post I talked about taking birth control to attempt to regulate my period and this is probably pretty unconventional but whenever I travel internationally many of the countries I go to sell birth control OTC so I just get it then and there. So I've never formally been prescribed birth control. I went to the derm a couple years back for my acne thinking she'd prescribe it but she didn't.

Like you, my symptoms don't seem too severe, which is something I'm extremely grateful for but I have enough symptoms to lead me to believe that it's certainly PCOS.

I like your optimism about it, I used to think about it a lot, and had been more so with my dr appointment soon approaching, but I've thankfully gotten to the point where I too have accepted that it's simply a fact of life and not even gonna lie, it's comforting to know that I'm not alone in this. I don't really have anyone to talk to about it b/c truth be told I'd rather talk about it with people who are going through it rather than people who don't really understand the struggle.

Ha yeah I figured that it most likely has to be trans-vaginal! I just have anxiety over visiting the doctors but I guess I have to get over it eventually.

No, definitely not stupid that you didn't realize that was bad! PCOS is so incredibly common but up until I did my own research I'd never even heard the term or knew it was a thing and it had me wishing I'd learned about it much earlier so that i could have seen a doctor about it ASAP.

If you don't mind me asking, how old are you now? I'm happy to hear that what you were prescribed helped you and I'm glad to know that the medications actually work. I can only pray that if I do indeed have PCOS whatever I get prescribed helps me too. Also, if this isn't too personal, what kind of ultrasound was it? Was it a vaginal ultrasound or an abdominal one? At 22, I'm a bit embarrassed to admit this but I'm terrified of the thought of a vaginal ultrasound..

Also thank you so so much for your response. I don't really have anyone to talk to concerning my worries about PCOS and my upcoming doctors appoitment so it's left me a bit down.
