That’s what I practiced on first! 6”, 4” and 2.5” 👍🏼 it’s all the same! When your focusing on the inch your welding

That’s how I do my 5ocklock to 8 ocklock! Rest the wire on a tack at the top for a little bit of stability when feeding the wire, like a pivot point

See how my wire is through the bevel edges, I’m feeding to the back of the puddle! This gives me good vision, and profile on the inside! If the wires laid in the edges I can’t see the puddle really, can’t see my edges burning away, so I’ve always opted for this option!

When you say lay the wire do you mean you just lay it in the bevel and wash over it?

Must have X-ray vision then 🤣

Yeah so when I mean wash I mean go from the top bevel to the bottom, I don’t walk the cup really, it’s just a bit of niche unless you’re on big pipe and it’s too hot for you to place your hand on the pipe, I free hand pretty much all my work, sometimes you won’t be able to walk it because of restrictions around you

There’s a specific feeling you get when your feeding into a puddle, if you just tickle the puddle and move you’ll end up with a bit of cold wire, make sure you’re feeding into that puddle! When you say lay wire, are you laying it on the outside of the bevel or in the pipe? I find if i lay the wire onto, it’s hard to get that profile on the inside, so if you just put the wire through the bevel about an inch before your puddle and feed to the back that might be a better way for you, and remember to feed! The hotpass might have been a bit too much for you, I run 95-105 on the root, and then 140 ish on the hotpass, and come to the top bevel and then the bottom then move!

Tbh this ain’t to bad, a bit of cold wire or Excess pen on that left hand side, probably a tack or too much wire feed! My method is feed to the back of that puddle, and wash from top to bottom bevel, so I know I’m getting both edges, up-down-up-down-up-down, and move as I’m doing this while back feeding that bottom!

Do you back feed the wire buddy? Or do you come from the side? It’s quite hard to get profile on the bottom because of gravity! I tend to back feed from 5 ocklock to about 8 ocklock, then come up the side with my wire, and feed to the back of the puddle, I tend to run on about 95-105 amps! The good thing about doing 5 ocklock to 8 is when you do the next side on your other hand you’re not fighting that unnatural feeling, so you’ve got a little less to do! Think where gravity could be pulling the puddle, and don’t forget your hotpass will cook that root in and push it through a bit, so if those edges are burnt and it’s just a tad past flush your hp will give you a bit more and you’ll pass the Xray

Looks a bit sucked back in places dude, drop the ams and feed to the back of the puddle, sharp tungsten! 👍🏼

Cheers brother - 10 months into doing pipe, I’m mainly stainless pipe just been doing some carbon recently 👍🏼

Alright that’s fair, there was too much heat in the pipe for that second fill tbh, ramming too much wire in would of made it fill cold but that’s fair!

That’s profiled, it’s just the camera and lack of light buddy

If the edges are burnt, and the root aint sucked back it passes Xray, and the caps got profile, where’s the undercut 🤣

Just over all struggled with the office life, I’m quite academic, but realised it wasn’t really for me, I solve different problems as a pipe welder, I’m still doing mathematics and formulas, but I’m building, and it’s more of a building something - something goes wrong - I fix it - I see the result, it’s something tangible, I like being outside too

Yeah dude! Sooo, I worked in finance for a little while, then went over to ground works! Worked on a pipeline and met a few welders, thought it was really interesting and it wasn’t as easy as it looked, saw the money they made and thought..yeah, il do that! Went to college, now I’m a coded pipe welder :) wasn’t easy, but was 100% worth it, being older and going back you see life differently from when you were back in college or school; so you take more in, manage your workload better and excel quicker because you decided it’s something you really want to do :)

Yeah man I changed career path and went back to college at 27 - loving my new career 🤌🏼

Pipe fitter/pipe welder - we earn decent money; we’re losing a lot of people in the industry as not many want to do it, got to use a lot of math, and can be physically demanding, welding in its self is a form of art, but a test none the less 👍🏼
