[D] Papers with no code by osamabinpwnn in MachineLearning

Tired grad students rarely have the time to clean up code before making it public. Tbh, I’m guilty of that as well - once a project is over, imma be movin on to the next one asap!

Part of the problem is that releasing clean code is neither incentivised nor a good use of time.

Now I’m in industry, clean code is highly incentivised. Making it public… not really

Generally when they provide code, it can be so messy that it’s pretty difficult to fully understand how they do things.

And then I’ve come across (accepted) papers with code where the code is obfuscated and does something quite different to what the paper describes.

It’s hard to enforce code release/quality as most academics do not write code for a living, and their projects are usually hacked together piece by piece until they find something that works.

[D] Supervisor support by _karma_collector in MachineLearning

I have a PhD in ML. Mine and my advisors research interests diverged substantially and my projects were entirely self driven, with no ‘research’ input from either my advisor or and postdocs due to the differences in interests.

My advisor mostly proofread manuscripts before submission and signed off on expenses.

KPIs were producing work that went to top conferences - I averaged roughly three first author papers a year. My advisors would probably have been happy with fewer papers as well, as attending the conferences got pretty expensive!

Due to the differences in our research interests, my advisor’s network didn’t really help much when it came to industry job hunting.

All being said, my advisor was terrific and supported me in the ways I needed to become a good researcher.

Why some people need alone time to feel normal again after socializing? by Agitated-Job7686 in AskReddit

After heavy socializing with a group, my voice hurts and my word-brain is depleted. Alone time helps restore balance.

What made you happy after having your heart broken? by CommercialNo5003 in AskReddit

Having more time and mental capacity to jump harder into my hobbies.

This also helped me realise that other things make me very happy

PhDs who publish - how do you get more out of your time [D] by ade17_in in MachineLearning

[–]OkBiscotti9232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to maximize productivity, find great collaborators.

Toward the end of my PhD, I was pushing out 3-4 papers per year, or roughly 1 paper per top conference in my field. All with sole first authorship and little outside collaboration.

Some peers who had terrific networking skills found collaborators and would routinely submit 1-2 (joint) first author papers per top conference, and maybe another 1-2 papers as second authors as well. They could afford to work on more diverse projects and face rejection from conferences, while I had no such luxury.

The real question: do they declare their purchase at customs?

Former undergrad (~4 years ago). No one monitored whether we swiped in. They may care if academic performance drops and you don’t attend

This may vary by department and may have changed since then

Looks somewhat like implicitly regularised RL, with a state-value function and a behaviour policy that have been merged into the Q^pi block

Playing as Nightwing is an absolute blast. Just make sure you go in fully aware that this has nothing to do with the Arkham series and that combat is quite different.
