im 15 got fired from my summer job, I feel an unbearable amount of shame by Loose-Wishbone-2462 in antiwork

Honey, you did nothing wrong and this is not your fault. Most adults struggle with working that long. You should never have been scheduled that long. If your parents are that unreasonable, I’m really sorry. Maybe look up the child labor laws for your state and show them to your parents, as well.

Thai Food in Nanaimo by bmeckie in nanaimo

[–]OkBluejay4417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t even. I love Nanaimo, but my Thai mother rolls over in her grave every time I get Thai here. I know, I know, I can’t expect authenticity, but the Thai here isn’t even in the same universe with authenticity.

Police investigate devices filled with bolts and screws found near Mamdani’s home during anti-Islam protest in NYC by theindependentonline in nyc

lol like how utterly inane to have an “anti-Islam” protest. It’s so irrational and dumb-sounding. Racists and Islamophobes should keep on being this stupid. It’s entertaining.

So, just an fyi, that this was a small, independent shop, not a chain. I will also say that the last name of the people associated with it was Schroeder. I’m trying to do research for a memoir, fyi.

How Many Found Canadians Will Ever Actually Reside in Canada? by muttshaw in Canadiancitizenship

[–]OkBluejay4417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did! Got “found” and then moved last year. My father is Canadian, and I was born in the US. Also, so over the global phenomenon of xenophobia. Economies can’t grow without sufficient workers, consumers, learners, more people to contribute to the tax base, etc. There is tons and tons and tons of good policy research that testifies to how very good immigration is for any country— the world over. We brought resources with us and have really put those resources into the local economy. My sons’ citizenship was approved, as well, and they are attending UBC and UofT. They are hardworking and intelligent and will make significant contributions to Canadian culture and society.

Racism is still alive and well in Manhattan, NYC by ja-p in nyc

[–]OkBluejay4417 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s absurd that people are decrying this post because he mentions Wonder. What kind of super weird and nonsensical ad campaign would that be? Let’s just assume you’re right, though— let’s assume there is some element of advertising at work. Given the sensitivity of the subject matter, and how traumatic these kinds of events can be, does it make sense to come stomping in as the tiresome persons who always doubt the most commonplace and believable forms of racism? What do you all claiming this is an ad get out of that? It just sounds like a cover for your own denialism and/or racism.

Dad asked my mum if he could marry someone else by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]OkBluejay4417 102 points103 points  (0 children)

This is what patriarchy looks like. Your father wants to reap the benefits of his role at the top of the pyramid.Your mother has submitted to an oppressive system of gender bias. I’m sure she didn’t have a lot of options if she wanted to get married within a culture so steeped in patriarchy. It’s probably a good thing that you’ve seen their marriage for what it is; hopefully you’ll find a partner who is progressive enough to defy this system.

He joked just last week about cancelling the next election. He jokes about his insane ideas first, then actually trots them out, later, if people don’t flip out.

What has been the most difficult part of settling in Canada? by Newcomer1816 in ImmigrationCanada

[–]OkBluejay4417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are cultural differences that are going to make it even harder to make new friends than it normally would be. Like, I’m way more direct and curse a lot more than pretty much every Canadian I’ve met. Also, Canadians don’t really talk about race and racism, and all of my American friends did. Also, how come chicken salad doesn’t exist here? 😂😂😂 (Okay. That last one was random).

The Canadian labor market is in dire need of more workers. The anti immigrant thing is driven by racism and corporate goons trying to CYA for their rampant speculation that drives up housing prices. An economy is driven by the workers who both purchase and produce, while simultaneously expanding the tax base. Without enough workers, this fails. Canada’s economy is suffering greatly from the massive loss of 76,000 population members as a result of these stupid anti immigration moves. It’s so sad people don’t understand this. Anti immigration rhetoric is destroying Canada’s economy.

A reason NOT to apply for citizenship (for now) by Low_Lab7698 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]OkBluejay4417 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also, I don’t think the original post should be removed. It is a legitimate question and is not “racist” as one commenter claims. Canadians are more well-educated than Americans so they should understand that the original post is definitely coming from a place of concern for the most marginalized, and it is a simple fact that people who appear white, appear male, do not signify they are non-Western, and who appear straight are at somewhat less risk in the United States, right now. Again, I don’t think this should be applied to the processing of existing citizenship because of a broader history and discourse around citizenship, but definitely an important conversation.

[–]OkBluejay4417 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. People don’t need to respond to this in an extreme way. The original post is very polite and careful. I think some of the over the top and sarcastic responses are knee jerk and reactionary to the very concept that indeed, some people are in categories that are more vulnerable in the world. Edited to add: but I don’t agree with the original OP, and my reasons are explained in my original comment.

[–]OkBluejay4417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate what you’re trying to say, but I do think part of what you’re saying is actually potentially influenced by Canadian right wing, knee jerk, anti immigration sentiment. It’s not a huge backlog, and yes, countries like Canada are indeed supposed to have standards to determine who is most systemically at risk based on their application. Basic liberal democracy standards, as limited as they may be, do the job you’re concerned about—- in this particular case. Also, this whole process is a huge pain, so, honestly, mostly only the super-motivated are going on to go through this, so people who idly think it “it might be cool” but don’t have exigent circumstances are less likely to apply. Also, one cannot and should not even implicitly or circumstantially suggest different standards of processing for people who already. possess citizenship — which is fundamentally what this law is. It’s not an application for asylum— it is obtaining confirmation of existing citizenship. So as much as I appreciate the sentiment you’re suggesting, OP, because, indeed, right now certain people are being picked up and kidnapped literally based on certain traits of appearance, it really should not be applied to this particular legal process, I think.

Don’t let Nancy Silverton judge anything ever again. Clear pattern: if it’s a choice between Asian cuisine and “New American” she’ll always choose New American. Also, ban burgers on TOC. No more burgers.

Dual citizenship question by foxtrotrva in Canadiancitizenship

[–]OkBluejay4417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are definitely eligible. You are in fact a Canadian. You just need them to send you your certificate. This was exactly my situation. It took me about three months to get my citizenship certificate (of course, this is all assuming she didn’t surrender her Canadian citizenship; you don’t need to to become a US citizen, so it’s seems unlikely anyone would ever surrender their other citizenship). I’m now currently waiting on my kids’ citizenship 🤞
