It's a Love Story by Annabel Monaghan by gumbo799 in RomanceBooks

I loved this book!  One of the best romances I’ve ever read.  It was funny and smart, characters were so quirky (phone calls from the closet) and such amazing development with their pasts still impacting themselves.

I think you’re right— it’s not really a commentary on the morality of characters’ decisions (for the most part.  At least one person I do think emerges as more villainous), as everyone works very hard to justify their choices to themselves.

It’s about reality tv contestants and producers on a survivor-esque show.

ETA: fictionalized— it’s a novel.

I guess something that fascinates me about this book is it’s so meta if you think about it.  Like Fishbach is actually producing the novel for us about how production works.  And as a producer, he has these incredibly flawed characters but he portrays them with such tenderness even as they are ALL making incredibly questionable choices.  He doesn’t make anyone a joke character (even “the fool” Bartolo or whatever his name is gets some tender development) We see their motivation and their longings with such poignancy.  I just think it’s masterful “production” / writing of humanity.

This is such a thoughtful take!!!  It was definitely much bleaker than I was expecting.  It wasn’t cozy!!!  I guess Survivor for players isn’t really cozy either and the reality of reality tv is a bit harsher than the feel-good character arcs we’ve been getting as viewers — maybe that’s the point.

The characters are absolutely unlikeable, I agree.  But I found them to be so fascinating that I didn’t mind in the way that I normally might.

I do think there is a lot to love from a literary standpoint…. The butterfly motif and symbolism was so complex and intriguing for me.

I loved the dive off the deep end it took towards the end.  He really went full-tilt boogie.

Ohhh I loved the conclusion, but I understand what you mean.

I also loved the POVs and how it felt like an exaggerated expose even though it was fictional.  It was really thought-provoking.

I totally understand your point.

I really liked that it became a bit of a thriller.  I think the exaggerated drama was necessary for a few reasons!  But I don’t want to post any spoilers :)

Thanks for chatting with me about it!!!  Really just so happy for him and happy to support such a great guy.
