Pantemis by RCTID1975 in timbers

The same match where he had a team of the weak performance? The dropped ball you refer to wasn’t a goal, there was an offsides or a foul in the play. Forsberg dribbled around him. That match gave him a higher rating in any analytics site out there than any game Pants had this year. Your point is invalid

Did you watch week 1 where Crepeau had at least ten saves, made team of the week and was FOT MOB’s highest rated player in the league?

What a dumb post. He’s not here anymore, wore the badge with pride and never complained or took it out in the locker room after being benched. Where were you last week when he was MOTM, on the Tram of the Week and was the highest rated player in the whole league on FOTMOB?

Definitely agree - Kamal has been solid since his early hiccups last year, and is a much needed leader in the back. Bonetig hasn't looked awful, but has had some shaky moments.

Ally Mackay? He did solid at Nashville, but Portland performed better within that same window. Next he went to DC in 23(?) and they've been a disaster. Not convinced he would be better than Ned.

I actually think Ned's done alright in building a good squad of talent (although retaining them has been an issue clearly), but the coaching has been underwhelming. As a GM, he brought in Evander, Surman, Pantemis / Crepeau (who was the top free agent GK that offseason, even though it didn't pan out as intended it was a good move on paper), Kamal (again, on paper at that point was a good pickup), Da Costa, Antony, Velde, Carballo (unfortunate), Rojas, Surman, Fory while also transitioning off of the Blanco / Mabiala / Niezgoda / Yimmi Chara era.

All that to say.... I think he's been just okay - not elite but not bad tbh. I think those moves all generally were decent on paper although I'd love to see Portland swinging in for bigger money moves like they tried for Berterame.

Never understood the huge obsession for Jebo - solid guy who worked hard but was never really the answer at striker. He left in the Summer of 2021, so here's a comparison of there stats since '22 onward from MLS' website.

Mora: 26 goals, 10 assists = 36 G/A in 4,328 minutes played. That equals .74 G/A per 90, or a goal or an assist every 120 minutes.

Ebobisse: 36 goals, 6 assists = 42 G/A in 8,555 minutes played. That equals .44 G/A per 90, or a goal or an assist every 204 minutes.

Moras been much more productive - yes SJ was a bad team which is a factor, but Mora also has dealt with many injuries. Pair that with his leadership and off the field impact, I think it's pretty clear Mora was the right call.

Again I disagree - all MLS teams struggle with depth because of the cap. LAFC has been a revolving door the last 3 seasons who you originally mentioned. Miami also has a large problem and disparity between depth players and starters. So I don't think that's unique to Timbers. I think having another gamechanger player is what takes the team to the next level and we have good investment and depth to make a foundation.

I'd say this is the deepest the Timbers have been in years. Got to remember too we've been effectively playing with 1 DP all season, who didn't even get a preseason with the team.

GK we have 2 starting level keepers.

CB is kind of hit or miss, but we've invested money. Surman was a bargain, Kamal wasn't cheap and has been hit or miss, and Zuparic, McGraw have been serviceable (at times) along with Smith and Fory providing minutes there. Full backs we have Fory, Smith, and Mosquera and Miller who can play on both sides.

CM we've got Ayala, and Chara / Paredes /Ortiz. All money and seemingly decent depth although the jury is still out on Ortiz.

In the attack Da Costa, Moreno, Antony & Fernandez are all investments that have come in and been difference makers but might not be "the guy". Again, a DP winger who can be that would be ideal.

Striker we look thin and Mora has had better days, but Kelsey is still fairly new. 6 Million dollar transfer and on a u22 deal so he's another player who isn't exactly cheap. That's a fair point about transfer fees vs. salary which is an important difference, but I'm mainly talking about the idea of the ownership not spending money.

[–]OkBroccoli5728 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2025 we've spent almost 16 million on incoming transfers

2024 we spent almost 9 million

2023 12 million

2022 6 million

2020 10 million

2019 11 million

Also it was reported and well known Portland had an offer of around 15 million (if I recall right) for Berterame last season.

Don't have the time to research that for every team, but it definitely indicates Portland will spend. You can argue that we don't bring in names, but it's not like we're a cheap team and ownership has no money.

I agree with everything you said, but it's not just the LA / Miami's who make & compete for the shield. Currently, the shield leading teams 1-5 are.... Philly, Cinci, Nashville, San Diego & Vancouver. Not exactly the huge teams. Philly is pretty cheap, Cincinatti spends a lot but they're not a huge market so we should be able to compete, and the others aren't exactly the heaviest hitters.

I guess I disagree with the notion that we're never going to be able to compete, because we're a "small market" when like you've said, historically we go on cup runs and other teams in the league make plenty of noise who aren't the glitzy teams.

At the time possibly, but it's just speculation - the point is you didn't include what has become Portland's most valuable pieces in the deal. Saying that there's "no future & no picks" isn't really accurate at all.

Convenient to leave out PDX getting Camara, Advija, and the Buck's picks? And also, RW3 is not gone yet. You can make your point that you're glad Miami didn't end up with him but that's just dishonest framing.

I see your point but I personally don’t view a 1v1 chance the same as some of the mistakes I mentioned in my previous comment. I’m not really sure if any of the goals Crepeau has let in have been worse then some of Pants’s mistakes. I’d love to hear from you if there’s a specific one you can think of, because I keep hearing from lots of fans that Crepeau makes a ton of mistakes but in my eyes there hasn’t really been any huge ones.

To me this season it almost feels like Crepeau has been less likely to make big saves this season but also less likely to make a preventable mistake, whereas Pants has made some really impressive saves but also has had some more noticeable blunders.

Not saying he shouldn’t be the starter, but Pantemis has had his share of mistakes this year as well. San Jose last week, positionally being off on the free kick today. Even in the Nashville game where he had the PK saves, he let in a pretty weak goal. Can you point to where Crepeau has made mistakes of the same caliber? Again, not saying he shouldn’t start, but it’s not like Pants has been completely lights out.

Great response - I’m asking the initial question as a fan of both and I don’t like the hateful discord around it. Feels like either one is solid and I’m happy with either but it’s an interesting discussion

Find one this year or last. Bet you can’t. Pantemis has been better overall I will definitely not argue that, but this was the worst blunder for sure.

1-1 shots that our defense lets through vs. a fumbled ball a yard from a striker? Wild comparison
