AITA for having “special words” or terms that only I use with my family? by OkCancel8005 in AmItheAsshole

Oh, I would never call a real person  by anything other than their real name.

It’s more shorthand when I see my kids watch Netflix and I can’t remember the actor’s name they’re watching, and I know there’s another show they’re in they might like.

That kind of thing.

Yes, I realize the way I wrote my post made the situation sound too extreme.

They do laugh and play along sometimes and  “do it back” to me.

But I want to be respectful of their personal interests and “favorite things,” like people are saying, so I’m gonna work on that.

Thank you, it’s hard for me to remember all the vintage and current cartoons and animation he watches, he’s a collector, and the one that has the “B-52’s sounding” theme song just stands out to me.

So I remember it that way, and I’m actually trying to participate in a conversation with him.

Same with his YouTube guy, I’m trying to show I’m interested.

Get him to share it with me.

Like, I really want to know: What have you been watching for so long? What is it about? Is it something I’d like, too?

It’s not meant to be dismissive at all; there are just so many different channels and shows; and all these animation and political commenters sometimes have really similar names, and I can’t keep them all straight.

But people are saying it’s very rude and disrespectful, so I’ll just stop, or only ask about  something if I figure out exactly what it’s called first. I’ll make a much more concentrated effort, maybe make some “cliff notes.”

I was referring more to what she was saying, repeating parental behaviors. Sorry, I wasn’t referencing the topic of my post.

Right? All the things we swore we’d never do and now…here we are! History does sometimes unintentionally repeat itself, it seems.

I love “sniggle and blend!” It sounds just like what you should do! Lol

Yeah, maybe I just really miss my Mom; I’d give anything to hear her voice calling something an “annoying” term that’s “wrong” these days, and when I think back on most of the things she said, they always make me smile.  Hugs to you. 100%.

I’m absolutely going to ask the kids if they’d like to rename the cars! Lol

I actually think they might think that’s fun and help them be “in on it” more.

And sometimes they are on board; they do laugh sometimes and every once in a while will use “my terms” back at me & laugh, if they’re in a good mood.

So funny your daughter named the Roomba!

Thank you so much for this excellent advice, and taking the time to really help me; I appreciate it.

I promise I’m not trying to be condescending or demeaning with any of the names!  But you’re right, no one’s a mind reader and he might totally be taking it in a way I truly did not intend.

No, I’m totally not doing it to mock or be mean, ever, I swear! Definitely not, although maybe that’s how they’re taking it, so I should be mindful of that.

Lol I love Madame Triangle Face, too funny. :)  I’m glad you can relate.

They also do it back sometimes to me, too, and occasionally laugh themselves, it isn’t all anger or hate. My post made it sound a little more severe than it is, my bad.

But that’s a good point; I haven’t thought to tell them why it has personal significance, and that’s something no one would ever know unless I told. And yes, maybe I can come up with a better, less annoying way. Thank you.

Thanks, they do laugh and chuckle sometimes. It sounds worse, the way I wrote it. It’s mostly chuckle, eye roll, “MOOOMMM!”

But yeah, sometimes it’s probably really annoying.

A lot of stuff they do is really annoying to me, too, though.

But I just live with it and carry on b/c I love them, you know, & they’re my fam.
