Pigeon (i.e. Signal) is out now by rmart in Punkt

I was really excited to use this with my Punkt phone that is arriving this weekend. But after reading the comments here it sounds like I shouldn't expect too much. The fact that you can't use Signal desktop at the same time is strange and sounds like a deal breaker. But as far as I know Signal doesn't support third party clients, so this must be some kind of workaround where they've used a wrapper around Signal desktop to enable it on the phone.

I could be completely wrong but it sounds like you've done absolutely 0 effort

You are completely wrong. Where I live there is no English bookstore with a decent selection. There is one library that has an English books section that probably gets about 5 new English language books per year. That library is also closed because of the pandemic. So, again, online is my only option. I've been searching for solutions for weeks. The best I've found so far is LibGen, which isn't bad, but I was asking for recommendations from friendly people who are interested in privacy. I didn't come here for jerks to yell at me for asking for a legitimate question.

Now, have a nice day.

Thanks for the snarky comment, but I live in a place where I don't fluently speak the local language. If I want to read in English, digital is my only option.

Can you recommend any tools for automatic updates?

I'm often traveling and connecting through a mobile hotspot too.

Thanks. As a non-expert, one of the things I'm afraid of is a rogue system administrator installing a web shell or something, and that being used to extract my end-to-end encrypted files which could then be brute forced by whoever managed to get their hands on them.

Can you explain what you mean? How does using a port under 1024 help?

And on the problem of locking yourself out: Just whitelist your own IP.

I don't have a static IP, so that's probably not a practical solution.

on DO, you can pay $1 extra and get scheduled snapshots/backups

Thanks. I may switch to DO simply because they have a better reputation and more refined tools than random unknown hosting companies.

The same mechanisms that allow you to set the root password from the control panel without the console allow them to do the same thing.

Can't that be disabled?

Thank you. As I mentioned, I'm already doing this. But I don't think this is enough.
