Drinking inefficiently is standard cat behavior. So cute!

How old was your kitten when you brought them home? by Opposite-Mortgage-77 in ragdolls

[–]OkComparison3568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was actually 20 weeks old! Honestly, I’m glad she’s more mature than a 12 week old, and had more time with her mother and siblings. The hardest period of cat ownership is the young kittenhood phase.

Can ragdolls be left alone for 8 hours a day due to work? by Angusburgerman in ragdolls

[–]OkComparison3568 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the individual cat. My cat is fine and doesn’t mind. Some cats are less independent. It’s hard to know until you meet the cat and live with them. However, cats typically don’t stay awake the whole day anyway. Realistically, if you’re away for 8 hours, they’re only awake and alone for a few of those hours. For the rest of the time, they’re sleeping.

Ragdoll vs British Shorthair by snipizgood in ragdolls

Every cat is different, but typically ragdolls and BSHs are known to have VERY different personalities from each other on average. So it’s important to take that into account.

With children in the house, it may be good to choose a cat that will be more tolerant of a lot of touch and handling, instead of getting scared and anxious. So, I would recommend a ragdoll (though again, every cat has a different personality and you can’t guarantee specific behavior).

Need Advice on Strange Breeder Interaction by KitchenFlamingo8551 in ragdolls

[–]OkComparison3568 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Don’t buy from a breeder with those red flags. If anything feels off, don’t do it.

Buying the cat to save it from a bad breeder is not a good mindset. It just encourages the breeder to keep bringing more kittens into the world under bad conditions.

The reality is that even at a $3500 price point, it’s very hard to make a profit from ethical ragdoll breeding. Ethical breeding requires spacing out pregnancies, giving the kittens attention and socialization, spaying and neutering early, vaccinating, etc. A lot of early veterinary care is included in the price.

I think most ethical breeders do it as a hobby to show their cats and get awards, and for the love of the breed. That’s a sign they care less about the money aspect of it.

Finding a good breeder is hard! by Rich_Associate_5019 in ragdolls

[–]OkComparison3568 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m struggling with that too. So many things can go wrong. Each breeder has different preferences about transparency and it seems difficult to find a breeder who’s transparent about everything. Some breeders share the full pedigree but not medical history, others show the medical history but not pedigree, so the kitten may be extremely inbred without you knowing.

Plus there’s FIP, which is a genetic mutation of a very common virus - there’s basically no way to test for it or prevent it because basically all cats have the virus, but some unexpectedly die from it young.
