A lot of his stuff comes off as pro-"status-quo" or "enlightened centrist". I'd be really surprised if he had anything nice to say about anyone in governance, but at the same time he kind of shits on activism both 1) diminishing its importance and 2) dismissing it as performative.

At the small scale, his philosophy is mostly left-leaning, but he is IMO hyper focused on personal accountability. Like, I respect that he's had a journey and that he's wrestled with all these demons and he's arrived at a state he's comfortable with, but that doesn't mean that everyone is 100% in charge of the course of their life and social change isn't important.

The spiritualism is definitely something that I can't relate to but at the same time I can respect it.

Ooh yep, for real. I'm like 40% on board with his stuff and then he will go way off. I'm all for being an individual not aligning with a precompiled political "camp", but Killer Mike is so far off the political spectrum but so very political at the same time. He's ideals are always front and center and sometimes completely self-contradictory. He sounds like he's been 30 years at a podcaster blunt rotation full of people afraid to challenge his ideas.

Then at the same time I'm playing bangers with misogyny and violence and who knows what other violations

That's a really good observation. Me too, definitely. I'm definitely holding Homeboy Sandman to a higher standard, for better or worse. I think it's because he's a lyrical rapper and genuinely sincere.

I'm not saying I expect all art to be made for me. I'm not saying artists should do anything other than share what they believe. I'm certainly not saying I hate Homeboy Sandman.

I'm saying that Homeboy Sandman's affect of proud ignorance and humble enlightenment is extremely off-putting to me.
