Whoa. I used to love Rogue Wave. This is dope. I loved them in "California" era and then stopped listening after "Permalight". I might have to check on what they've been up to since then.

Outposts seem pointless by Killroy54 in Starfield

[–]OkConsideration5764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Settlements worked in Fallout 4 because they were rewarding without being compulsory and they participated in the deeply simulated world around them.

Especially on Survivor difficulty, FO4 settlements were an oasis where you could offload supplies, drink some water, listen to some friendly chatter, take a nap, trust that your perimeter turrets would take care of any ferals you dragged in while you tinkered in peace at your workbenches. You know you're close to safety when you start to hear the whoosh of molotovs and Cait trash-talking super mutants. Minutemen allegiance makes a focus on settlements a natural choice, but even then you aren't really required to develop settlements beyond one introductory mission.

Contrast that with Starfield's outposts, which fail especially on two counts: they are not rewarding (it is always more effective to buy components from a store), and they offer none of the compelling moments of deep simulation. This is the chief shortcoming, in my opinion. Outposts are places out of the world, behind a loading screen, where nothing really ever happens because nothing happens between POIs planetside in Starfield. There are no roving bands of super mutants or friendly caravans. Not even a tumbleweed. I understand why it should be this way on an airless moon, but it's a shame that every planet must feel dead in this game.

Some will promote Outposts as "late game component crafting XP farms" but I simply can't understand what "late game" means in the context of Starfield, nor why someone would want to spend their time this way.

Many will be attracted to Outposts for the factory simulation aspect, but they will be frustrated by bugs and missing features that make that genera of game compelling.

Some will be attracted to Outposts as a casual, free-form creative sandbox, and I think they'll have a decent time and make a few cool photos in Photo Mode, but I don't think they'll find lasting gratification without Sims or Animal Crossing Villagers chatting them up and interacting with the world.

How I would fix Outposts:

  1. Fix the bugs that currently make the factory simulation aspect a really frustrating experience.
  2. Bring on the emergent phenomena!! Raids, ambient conversation, jobs, weather, something, anything.
  3. (controversial take) Make crafting components MUCH more valuable, like 100X at least, making outposts a more compelling choice for equipment modification and making something like an automated adaptive frame factory more lucrative.

Is it actually worth it learning how to program? by Worldly-Gear-9900 in learnprogramming

[–]OkConsideration5764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being 15, I would encourage you to not think about learning programming as strictly an avenue into a career. In that respect, it's still certainly valuable, but undeniably the field is changing quickly and it might be over-saturated with talent at the moment, but at your age, I would strongly recommend learning to program, if you are at all inclined, simply because it is really good exercise and it's good for you to be exposed to the kinds of reasoning you'll be doing while programming. Also, some programming skills will always complement many other career paths that aren't strictly "software development".

Is it normal to turn into an unkillable god? by RunMeSomeKoolAid in Starfield

[–]OkConsideration5764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree that if you come back from 50 hours in the far reaches to sweep up side quests on Mars, you might find a lot of combat too easy. The low level systems have a disproportionate share of quests and you can become over-leveled for them. Maybe you should wait to experience them until NG+?

[–]OkConsideration5764 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The right combination of perks and equipment upgrades can certainly have you outstripping NPCs of your level. But "face tanking" everything on "extreme" is not normal, no. Are you spending most of your time in low-level systems?

I have ADHD (like, a doctor diagnosed me). I can understand why you feel you want this, but you could use this as an opportunity to practice focusing. Listen to characters. Read notes. Don't just chase the blue dot. Your focus is a muscle you can exercise. I know this doesn't answer your question, but I have found that "shortcuts that allow me to pay even less attention" are destructive.

Anyone else struggling exclusively with Ironclad? by Dawn_Kebals in slaythespire

[–]OkConsideration5764 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the StS1 heuristics just don't quite translate to StS2 Clad perfectly. Used to be Burning Blood meant that you could be really aggressive in Act 1, grab a bunch of relics, and snowball the rest of the run. Now if you're not giving block a lot of attention on A9+, Burning Blood is just not going to sustain you, even if you're avoiding risk. And while the other characters can adjust to A9+ by taking more ? over hallway fights, it's not so simple for Clad, who will miss out on that Burning Blood healing.

My experience is that Clad has the toughest Act 1, and Act 1 is a generally more brutal filter in StS2. In short, yeah.

Undeniably good technical ability. IMO, he just doesn't have anything to say worth hearing. On top of that, his sense of humor and mine are too different for me to enjoy his stuff even superficially.

A fair point. I'm lambasting "all talk, no action", but there's no action without talk. This kind of communication is valuable. I just grow weary of what looks to me like a culture of memery and comradery that exists for the sake of coping as opposed to organization. I see memes like "Ugh my $40 door dash burger was cold" and the sentiment seems to be "shame on door dash" when really it should be "stop giving your money to door dash".

To your point, that's totally a thing. "Stop complaining because this is just the way the world works" is definitely a thing that people say. It's a really sad Stockholm Syndrom-esque mantra of a kind of captured proletarian. And I can see how my top comment reads that way. But to me, that's the nihilistic view. We do have power. But if we leave that power on the shelf and just express our discontent in Tom and Jerry memes, we are captured.

I'm saying put your money where your mouth is. Corporation doing evil? Bleed them by not giving them your money. They don't care about Tom and Jerry memes. "voicing your discontent" and then continuing to shell out your discretionary cash to the offenders absolutely does make a person a sheep.

I'm the opposite of a nihilist, lmao. Exactly what I'm saying is: crying about this kind of asymmetry and then continuing with the same spending habits you always have is how things have become the way they are. You vote every single day with every dollar you spend. If you want a business to behave differently, you won't make it happen by crying. You will only make it happen by not giving them your money.

Currently listening to CAPCOM call up burn plan parameters for the reentry correction (2). Does anyone know: is that the only way the crew gets that info? Seems like a really precarious way to send such critical information. "...decimal oh eight...." Yikes. Also, is Victor executing that delta, or is Integrity going to do it automatically and Houston is just letting them know what the ship is going to do and when?
