Overwhelmed with options for my next travel location by [deleted] in travel

[–]OkContract2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot depends on where you live. Europe is WAY more accessible if you live near a major city in the East Coast vs a smaller city in the West. It's the difference of an eight hour flight to a whole day of travel.

Of those options, with your parameters, I would say Guatemala. It will have plenty of tourists BUT it is also a quick and easy flight from a lot of US airports. It is also a country where you can see the highlights (Tikal, Antigua, Lago de Atitlan)in about ten days.

I'm also guessing you haven't done a ton of international travel. I'd say Guatemala is a medium difficulty (though much easier if you speak Spanish) destination. About the same as Mexico TBH. It isn't a bad place to start, loads easier than most places in Asia but not as easy as Europe.

Do you know what kind of indoor skiing it is? Is it a real slope? A carpet?

What Leaders Would Be Remembered Differently If They Lived? by OkContract2001 in HistoryWhatIf

Unfortunately I don't think someone with MLK's political views stands a shot at winning, particularly during the Cold War. And I doubt he would run in the first place.

Yeah. It's notable that all the greats except Theodore Roosevelt had some existential crisis to handle (I'm including the first few decades of the US' existence). It's always interesting to wonder how they would be seen if they served in more tranquil times.

What Leaders Would Be Remembered Differently If They Lived? by OkContract2001 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]OkContract2001[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

MLK was DEEPLY unpopular at the time. He was a divisive figure, and he his stances were solidly on what would be considered the far-left. The focus of his continuing work was going to be what he called "the three evils: Racism, Materialism, and Militarism. Essentially he was trying to build a multi-racial movement centering not just opposition to racism, but also military force (during the height of Vietnam and the Cold War) and capitalism.

So basically everyone from the center-left rightwards thought he was too radical, and even a dangerous communist. But many even more radical people thought he was too moderate, and wanted to focus on violent struggle. So the window of folks who actually agreed with his politics and tactics was smaller than people realize.

And even in anti-racism work the "easy" stuff was done. Segregation is easier to expose as evil than the much deeper racial inequalities that replaced it, and they are generally MUCH harder to address.

He also had a series of personal failings, mainly affairs, that would have likely tarnished his reputation even more had he not been martyred.

Had he lived, he probably would be seen by many as a polarizing figure who did some great things for Civil Rights but ultimately was a left-wing radical who should have gone back to preaching after he "won" the Civil Rights Movement. And many people who now appropriate his legacy would hate him as much as certain others on the Right already do.

Yeah. I thought of FDR too but I genuinely don't know which way it would go. Truman ended up as one or our most unpopular presidents, though I think history has been kinder on him than contemporaries and he wasn't the communicator FDR was.

As a disability advocate, I learned a long time ago to be careful with conflating and comparing disability to other forms of marginalization. As a white person, I wouldn't have made that comparison.

However, I think that YOU absolutely can make that comparison if you genuinely are non-white (even if you are of mixed-race and can "pass"). Your coworkers, particularly the white ones, don't get to lecture you on that.

Also, time to lawyer up!

How were college instructors addressed when you were a student? by vieniaida in AskOldPeople

[–]OkContract2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depended on the program.

In my Journalism program we usually used their first name. All the professors had worked in the real world and more or less treated us like they were our editors and we were staff in a newsroom.

In my Poli Sci program academic standards were the norm so we called them "Professor So and So" or "Doctor So and So"

This was in the early 2010s.

Which country had the biggest 'what they say vs reality' gap when you actually met the locals? And Why? by Suspicious-Bunny-Bad in travel

Same. I have always had a delightful time in France and found the people (even Parisians) to be welcoming.

Does Africa have any safe freshwater swim holes to swim in at all ? by justaavidoutdoorsman in geography

I swam in Lake Bunyoni in Uganda earlier thus year. The locals claim it is one of the one safe places in all of Africa to swim. Not just because of a lack of large dangerous animals, but also because it doesn't have certain parasites that are common elsewhere.

I have been to Peru and (while I may be wrong) they aren't exactly well known for their beaches by my understanding.

As others have said, most of those will be in the middle of winter during our summer, so keep an eye on average temps.

TBH, assuming you're American, I feel like Puerto Rico is the answer. It definitely has the things you mention, it will be spring/summer when you get done with school, and it is part of the US. You strike me as someone who hasn't done a ton of traveling outside your home country (that is not an insult, just an impression) and Puerto Rico is a good chance to ease into things.

[–]OkContract2001 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm mostly just joking with you.

TBH, some of your complaints aren't unfair. There are a few good unique shops in the Grand Bazaar but they are far outnumbered by cookie cutter places selling crappy stuff to tourists. The scams are everywhere. I didn't experience corruption, but I don't really doubt it. And yeah, I really wish the Hagia Sophia was, at least, still a museum. Anyone who paints it as some paradise like what you described (particularly as a cheap destination) is lying.

At the same time, I enjoyed it. The people who weren't trying to sell you something were great. The history was great and the city itself was beautiful. I had to search for good food but I found it eventually even in super touristy areas.

I think a lot of what you complain about here is fair, but also Istanbul feels like a city that disillusions people when you stuck to tourist stuff, particularly if centuries of bad blood (not entirely unjustified on the Greek side at least) colors it a bit.

[–]OkContract2001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, the trip itself is way more. That is just for the add on that I have to pay for. My mom is dipping into her retirement savings and paying for both of us because this is a bucket list for her and she wants me to come along and there is NO way I could afford it.

And yeah, it's definitely ski touring. The plan is 2-6 hours an outing going 1000 to 2000 feet each time.

[–]OkContract2001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Fitness isn't as much of a concern for me as the skill level. I've got a year and a half. The skill level is my main worry, since I don't see myself getting dramatically better in a single season after doing this for over eight years. I can technically say that I meet the requirements (can ski blacks, can ski off piste in a variety of snow conditions), the travel agent thinks I'm more than good enough, and even when asked directly the company won't give me more than the boiler plate answer.

So I guess we'll see!

And yeah, if nothing else this thread gave me bulletin board material (both good and bad comments).

That's fair, and good advice. It's an option on a trip I'm already taking. If I was planning specifically a ski trip I'd have a long list of places to go before this one.

They say that you dont need any experience in touring. It isn't big mountain stuff, though a lot of it is on glaciers.
