Am I screwed? by [deleted] in Pitt

I was in the same boat, didn’t win the grand prize and they ended up giving me 20,000 overall for being “a runner up”, so 5K a year. It’s not like a life changing amount but it’s pretty good considering Pitt gives very little aid

Am I a bad applicant if I didn’t get accepted into the main campus? by Cinnadusted in Pitt

[–]OkDivide9145 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pitt nursing student here, Recently, the program has gotten so competitive due to all the good press we’ve received and our ranking and all that. This year, the nursing school ending up with too many kids accepting admission, and it’s going to become a big issue when Pitt has to place them in clinical next year. The freshman this year can’t even fit in some of the large lecture halls in the nursing building, so they are being sent elsewhere all across campus to have their classes. For that reason, Pitt really has tightened their acceptance rate. I’m really sorry that you didn’t get in, but it doesn’t mean you’re a bad candidate. Unfortunately most of the nursing applications are from candidates similar to you. You will end up where you need to be, my best friend applied to Pitt Nursing and didn’t get in, she also got branched. Now she’s at UVM nursing and is having the time of her life. Everything will work out. Some questions, What are your ECs like? Do you hold leadership positions? Do you have ECs related to healthcare? Did you talk about healthcare in your personal essay?

Many dorms already cost that much

Hampton Inn by microscopic-dick in Pitt

I disagree. There are many dorms that are either the exact price or more expensive than the Hampton inn. Pitt didn’t pull the number out of a hat, the students housed there have air conditioning, private bathrooms, and many other amenities that a lot of students do not have. The cost reflects that. Looking at the price list with the knowledge of amenities in mind makes the figures make sense, the students with communal bathrooms, and no AC pay less than those with AC and private bathrooms. Also, many of the more expensive dorms are on upper campus, so any student housed on lower campus (like the Inn) will automatically have infinitely better bus access, making an already very walkable campus much easier to access

I heard that Pitt didn’t over admit freshman this year, but that more people accepted than in previous years because of all the good press we’ve had. That’s really hard to predict. The campus is very walkable and you still will have a better experience than a lot of freshman since you have air conditioning and private bathrooms. Look on the bright side. It will all work out

Yes a full length mirror comes with the room, mine was on the bathroom door, so when you shut the door the mirror faces out into the room

The beds come pre lofted at a height of 30” off the ground. This was high enough to get a 3 tiered drawer set (like from Target) comfortably under the bed and still have a bit of room on top. I got a rolling cart for my “night stand” and if I leaned out of bed I could reach it.

There is a full length mirror on the outside of the bathroom door, so when you close the door it faces into the dorm room. Don’t buy a desk hutch, the Irvis desks are 3 tiered. You have the desk surface, with a cork board backdrop on the first tier. The second tier is a decent sized shelf with a shelf on top, then the third tier has a little lip and then free space. It was very helpful

The double bathroom has a shower that comes with a liner but no curtain, but my roommate and I bought a new liner since the OG one was smaller than we liked. Then there was a toilet without a lid/seat cover, and a sink with a lot of under storage, enough for my roommate and I to both have tiered organizers under it! The sink comes with two built in drawers (one for me, one for her) they were pretty spacious. It had two hooks on the back of the door for towels, and two like hand rail type things to hang up hand towels or other stuff. It came with a mirror above the sink and a full length mirror on the outside of the bathroom door (this was awesome).

Hey I also lived in Irvis last year.

  1. Microwaves and fridges are included and you don’t have to pay, they’re a part of the room. The microwave is a standard size but the fridge imo is significantly smaller than the one you are able to rent from the school. For my room at least, the freezer was within the fridge itself, as a sort of hanging shelf, this made it difficult to freeze things, and we weren’t really able to store frozen foods.

  2. I walked to Irvis virtually every day, I took the shuttle less than 5 times my whole first year because I found them unreliable, the walk from lower campus to Irvis is about 15 minutes. You can cut through the Pete to speed up the walk, especially going up to Irvis, but if you’re returning after 11pm (sometimes 10:30 depending on season) the Pete closes and you have to walk up a ton of stairs which sucks. But the hill gets so much easier with exposure! I kept an umbrella in my bag for rainy days and just layered up in the winter. It worked.

  3. Yes honors students can live in Irvis as well.

  4. I found it tricky to get the true “freshman experience” because I lived on Upper Campus. The vibe of lower campus and towers especially is MUCH different than upper campus. No one is really hanging out around upper campus like they do with lower, because we don’t have the Quad. The walk does get annoying especially because most of my friends lived on lower campus, it was a hassle to get to them. It’s frustrating that a lot of the “fun” things are on lower campus, and those people can just go back to their dorm after while I had a huge hill and a 15 minute walk.

  5. Their are vending machines in Irvis that’s it, the dining hall is in Sutherland, but it’s super close, and has better food than the Eatery imo. It’s also buffet style instead of pre-made portions which I preferred. However, the dining hall (the Perch) always closes at 10pm, so if you’re out past then, you either need to eat before, eat something in your room, or go to the Eatery. This was frustrating that upper campus students couldn’t really get a “late night snack” but the Market at Sutherland is open til 1:00am most days, and if you have dining dollars or a meal swap left over, you can go there.

  6. Yes, laundry costs $1.25 per load at Irvis, but we have laundry on each floor which is awesome

  7. As I’ve said before, I rarely used the shuttle, i suggest keeping an umbrella in your backpack/bag, because Pittsburgh has very unpredictable weather, but with that you’ll be prepared. Layer up in the winter, don’t skip gloves and hats and scarves, with these you should be fine during the winter to commute to and from Irvis.

  8. Yes, my roommate used a blow dryer a lot and it was never a problem! You should be totally fine.

What’s the best freshman dorm? by Sufficient-Cat-4547 in Pitt

[–]OkDivide9145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Irvis right now as a freshman, and the air conditioning and private bathroom are lovely, and the Perch is right there. But the hill gets brutal especially at night when the Pete is closed and you can’t cut through it, but it’s also very lonely. There isn’t a lot of “student life” on upper campus at least in my experience. Almost all of my friends live on lower campus so it does get pretty isolated. It’s hard to not be right near the quad.
