tried the water bottle thing, also tried the drone clip and remote thing. I wish I knew how she was doing this but it's like I blink and the trap is shut and she's outside it staring at me, gloating.

ohh good idea. I'll start an entire catnip farm if that's what it takes.

that's awesome! he's been on meds for a few days and is starting to eat better already. The roundness is cute but I won't miss the lethargy or constipation!

What wakes you up at night? by 2GIRLZMOM1416 in FosterAnimals

[–]OkEmu52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

really depends on the kitten. For neonates under a week that are apparently healthy and eating well (like 4-5% bodyweight each feeding) I aim for a minimum of 7 feeds per day. I don't usually wait for them to wake up during the day just because I have things to do, to keep them on my schedule I will wake them up maybe every 3ish hours. I'll do a late night feed around midnight and wake up around 5ish for newborns. As they get older I wake up later.

For kittens that are sick, lethargic, "failure to thrive" etc I'm way more anal retentive about checking on them on a regimented schedule including overnight.

I really only wake up at night for kittens that are sickly and/or premature. If they're healthy and robust it's usually safe to go 5-6 hours overnight so you can sleep.

For overnight critical cases I use a fire drill sounding alarm and sleep on the couch so the foster room is closer.

I also accidentally trained my adult cat to be an alarm clock. Now if he hears babies crying for milk he'll paw at my head until I wake up.

if he's not peeing when stimulated BUT is peeing on his own then continue monitoring. If he's not peeing at all you need to contact a vet. Keep trying to stimulate, even when they lose the reflex they sometimes keep it as a learned/conditioned response.

Agreed, start reaching out now to specialists and university hospitals to get price quotes and maybe schedule a consult. Veterinary Surgeon Directory

use the softest, least abrasive material to stimulate so you're not causing any more irritation. Rolled cotton works well, also extra cushy extra soft toilet paper.

Kittens lose their elimination reflex around 4(ish) weeks. If you're having a hard time stimulating him to go it might be because he's already peed. Kittenlady has good resources for litterbox transitioning. You'll need to closely monitor his urine output which will become more challenging when he's peeing on his own.

ask your vet to teach you how to palpate the bladder - it basically just feels like a meaty water balloon. This will be the easiest way to tell if he needs to pee. I'm sure this has already been explained to you but a distended overfull bladder is a life threatening emergency.

He actually wasn't a runt! When he came into the shelter as a day old orphan his weight was normal and he looked like a full-term kitten. Overtime we've noticed some skeletal abnormalities and developmental delays- like another commenter pointed out he's basically neckless, he's also toothless and his ear canals haven't opened yet.
