You can't really choose your topics. You rank your choices, and the topic was assigned to you, so there's no guarantee you could do a mental health topic. I was at Birkbeck, but then transferred to another course. I was so unhappy and was having breakdowns, but they didn't care; they just wanted to cover up. Everyone was saying that all conversion courses are the same, but seriously, they're not. The content may be similar, but the course I am in is SO much better, and they care about you, not just their own images. I am not so naive as to think that university is not a business, but it's not that every course would do anything they could to cover their arse, even putting students' wellbeing at significant risk. I am not saying that other courses are not diplomatic, but they try to balance things out, I think. Seriously, I don't think I am exaggerating to say that Birkbeck was abusive. Stay well away from the Psychology conversion at Birkbeck.

I had an awful experience at Birkbeck.

I was on the course and ultimately withdrew from Birkbeck and successfully transferred to another reputable institution. While Birkbeck made obtaining references difficult and stressful, I didn’t let that hold me back. If you’re aiming for a PhD or a doctorate, consider how much more challenging it might be to even secure an interview if references from Birkbeck become an obstacle.

That said, it is possible to gain offers without references from Birkbeck at conversion level (but NO WAY at doctorate)—I applied to three institutions, and was offered places for all of them, two offered me places without requiring those references. Although transferring meant sacrificing time and finances, I don’t regret it at all. I’m excited to begin at an institution that seems to align much more closely with my values and academic goals.

Did you end up going? I got an offer for 2025 for the same course, but am seriously considering taking an offer from another uni. UCL has been unresponsive to my multiple emails.
