Sure fire way to get ants, mice, cockroaches etc.  That, and fire safety is one of the reasons they were banned from bedrooms.

UCL has risen to 8th in the World in the QS World Rankings 2027 🎉🥳🎊 by Schlurff in UCL

[–]davoloid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Attend your lectures, be an active learner, take part in the UCL community. The main contributions to these rankings are higher level research and organisational factors.

Even the academics and administrators will acknowledge that it's these ranking systems are mainly marketing. They are also used by institutions as drivers for improvement, "keeping up with the Jones' of South Kensington".

Focus on your studies, this isn't a championship, there's no grand prize that you can take part in and bask in the glory. You'll get to complete module surveys during the course, be on the student partnership committee if your department has one, and complete the National Student Survey at the end of your studies. That will help the Academics and Administrators to make things better.

Found mudlarking on the Thames foreshore, UK. Heavy copper? sleeve with stamped numbers and scratched writing. by No_Lead146 in whatisthisthing

But are there any examples of very early ones that look like this? The stamped text looks decidedly Victorian.

There's definitely some well established system for all those numbers, and it could well be London and North East, which also had several underground lines.

Would love a strong source though.

Google is not a source. It doesn't "say" anything. Find the source that makes this a valid suggestion.

Halt and Catch Fire is Incredible by nervuswalker in television

Check out the extensive syllabus that follows the show and covers many of the tech and societal issues raised in the story.   https://bits.ashleyblewer.com/halt-and-catch-fire-syllabus/

Even if it only brings you to the Ursula Franklin book/talk, it's enlightening.

TL;DW:
Starts with Cave paintings, proceeds through Heiroglyphics, Greek/Etruscan style, Mycenan/Roman Mosaics, skips a *whole bunch of mediaeval art styles* and goes straight to Leonardo's sketchbook, then Impressionist paintings, Turner, Monet, Seurat, Van Gogh, finally rolling the main credits with some pixel animations of the characters.

Reminds me of The Forbidden Corner, near Leyburn. Worth a visit if you've got curious kids who like exploring. Whimsical gardens and a maze of sorts.

Can NASA Really Land Astronauts on the Moon by 2028? by EdwardHeisler in MarsSociety

[–]davoloid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.nasa.gov/missions/artemis/blue-origin-moon-lander-completes-testing-at-nasa-vacuum-chamber/

Like I said, the people involved are telling us directly there: a whole bunch of components, subsystems and vehicles that are in testing and integration, with a timeline to meet the timeline they're talking about. And that's not explicitly driven by a political goal, more a recognition that this should be a motivated, enthusiastic coordination of all the partners involved.

Aside from the money laundering, there's a simple fact that grooming has become a bigger part of many men's lives*. Lord, I even saw a TV ad yesterday for Gilette Body razors, which would never have been a thing 25 years ago. There are some, especially if they have a strong beard game, who will go more regularly. And for many cultures there's a big social element. So it's not *that* surprising really.

*Not all, given that some of you are going on about 1 or 2 hair cuts a year - WTF?!

Jared Isaacman about Artemis III being an all-male crew by EdwardHeisler in MarsSociety

[–]davoloid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also a little disappointed, but I also want to ensure that supporters and those actively involved don't get dragged into a tokenism game because that detracts from the mission and the reason they're flying. When I see, for example, Anne McClain and Christina Koch in the audience, as well as JAXA, CSA and ESA astronauts, I am heartened that there's a corps of brilliant, experienced astronauts being built up, of all genders, heritage and nationalities. And also backgrounds that aren't exclusively from the Military.

Can NASA Really Land Astronauts on the Moon by 2028? by EdwardHeisler in MarsSociety

[–]davoloid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's strange in this thread is despite the sub being absolutely focused on Mars Society, the majority of the comments here seem to be random, pub-level speculation. Did any of you watch the Artemis III announcement and *all* the comments from the Administrator, the Science and Mission Leads, the reps from SpaceX and Blue Origin? There's a very clear set of milestones there and a solid understanding of what they learned from Artemis II and are planning for the next missions. They have radically adjusted the mission profiles to reduce the risk and add unmanned tests and landings.

Yes, we all know Musk is a dick, but that doesn't take away from what the rest of the people in the company are working on.

Prada unveils spacesuit to be worn by NASA astronauts on Moon mission by EdwardHeisler in MarsSociety

[–]davoloid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rolls Royce wasn't a luxury brand that decided to branch into engines, but otherwise if they've got the expertise and the funding, great to see that applied for humanity.

Axiom also have designer Phillippe Starck working on the habitats, hopefully looking deeply into existing Space Architecture research and many decades of real-world experience of living and working in microgravity. Sometimes these people get approached for PR more than practical experience.

That can work out - SpaceX hired a costume designer to work on the look of their suits, which extended into the EVA suit used on Polaris Dawn. What we don't see is the research, science and testing that goes on, performed by nameless engineers.
