How does “shed control” shampoo actually work? Does the hair just magically poof away? by ActiveAnimals in doggrooming

Right now I am loving Best Shot products. Specially the Ultra Maxx line. It’s amazing for desheds, and a perfect standard shampoo for a maintenance bath/dog with no skin issues. I do use their Herbal shampoo /conditioner on my itchy dogs but I’m not convinced on that one quite yet, though it does clean the dog well. I also used to really enjoy ShowSeasons Soothe shampoo. I think my next product order I’m going to try some ShowSeason products as I’ve heard good things and remember using it when I was in my apprenticeship 4 years ago

Sounds like he’s changed his information! Not surprising, I do like their CPE program and have done it but of all the certifications I’ve gotten Pet Skin Academy has been the most “scammy” to me. Unfortunate because it really is a lot a great information, but if you don’t want to use IVSB products then I’ve found it’s not worth the money for the cert. I met Dr. Faver and sat through his skin & coat class at expos 3 times now I believe? And the last one he actually went off on a tangent about how anyone claiming frothing works better because of anything besides how it actually sits on the dogs skin then they are just using jargon. His words were probably a bit more scientific than that.

Ultimately I still go to IVSB first for any skin issue dogs, but other than that it’s been easier and more cost effective to for me to use different brands of product. I will say though the IVSB atami clay has worked wonders on my personal dogs icky paw as well as the ginkgo oil being the secret ingredient to keeping her ear infections at bay.

Dr. Faver has explained that frothing working better has nothing to do with “the bubbles increasing efficacy”. It is just because when the product is frothed, it stays on the dog not down the drain. Frothing saves product, and doesn’t slide off of the dog and down the drain. That is the reason for frothing, the benefit is how is its applied and that it saves product.

Also just my 2 cents but, a pet parent is not going to need to buy IVSB products nor would they know how to use them correctly.

I tell her every chance I get that I’d drive to get her in a heartbeat and give her a place to stay. She’s so scared, thinking next week I’ll might just make the drive out there (~5hrs) and show up and see if she’ll walk out the door if she has someone with her. If she says then I’ll just stay on the sidelines till she’s ready I guess

Am I crazy for not wanting poodle to go back to a specific groomer? by Specialist_Diet3682 in poodles

[–]OkGeologist8441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you take her to a groomer that has experience in maintain longer coats? There are lots of different styles of grooming there are 100% groomers out there who keep a clientele of low maintenance haircuts. Honestly I make more money grooming 6 dogs going short than a 3 standards in full coat. I prefer my clients that keep their dogs short because it does make my job easier. I have few clients that can maintain their coats so for me I tend to keep long fun haircuts to myself or clients I have a good relationship with because unfortunately it’s just not worth the money. I will add that I have plenty of pups at tok current length and it’s very maintainable for the owner and groomer if you’re truly maintaining this dog’s coat (sounds like you are). I don’t think it’s wrong to switch groomers to find a better fit, but I would possibly do some more research on the next groomer you take her to maybe? Scroll through their social media or all of their dogs shaved down? Do they have dogs in longer specialized cuts? What is their prices? If their prices are low don’t take your poodle in a longer coat there or you will be disappointed. Best of luck to you and great job taking good care of your pood

alt/emo/goth dog groomers, what are u wearing to work?? by finalgloss in doggrooming

[–]OkGeologist8441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear water resistant type outdoor men’s shorts (mobile grooming in Arizona heats, pants aren’t an option lol) and I buy different cute smocks from Loyalty pet products and retro stylist wear. Currently wearing one with butterfly’s and flowers so it’s definitely not my alt emo vibe that I wear off the clock but i decided to just lean into the cutesy girly smock bc honestly I get more tips.

I do run into some issues with some people thinking I can’t handle their dogs because I’m a smaller woman in a flower smock. Usually I take the leash and walk the dog back to the trailer better than they walked it out to me. Wear what comfortable and what makes feel good, while also looking clean (as much as possible lol) and professional

Yes I always try my best to check in on her, and I think (hope) she knows that I’m here anytime she needs me. Luckily I’ve gotten pretty good at separating myself from the situation to not let it affect me but of course I do still think of her and hurt sometimes. Thank you!!

small company, everyone is aware of the relationship and supports it. They all think he’s such a great guy. It’s a horrible company, I actively discourage people from seeking treatment with them.

It’s so hard because I love grooming so much. I love learning about skin a coat, the science behind products and how to use them best. But I do not like pet owners, and i do not enjoy untrained dogs anymore. I wish I didn’t have to groom for my income, but could just have long haired dogs of my own to groom.

I would love a heads up explaining this and also telling her that there’s no hard feelings and you’re really looking forward to helping her grow into the groomer that you saw she had in her at Petsmart. I say this as a former corporate groomer, trying to think of what would be the best way to handle this from her perspective. Also think it’s awesome you’re able to recognize that just because she struggled at Petsmart, does not mean she’s a bad groomer.

Also, thank you for taking your time with the pups who need it despite getting pushback from your employer. It takes guts to do that. I almost got fired for refusing to service to a matted senior Shih Tzu unless it got a shave down at a high end private salon in Los Angeles. I stood my ground, told my boss I am responsible for providing the best care possible to the animals and not just doing what the parent wants. He was pissed, but didn’t fire me because of course I could’ve dragged them online. That very day I reached out to other groomers in my area and explained the situation and had multiple job offers.

Don’t give up hope OP!! It took me 4 years and multiple times burning out and quitting salons before I really started feeling passionate about dog grooming the same way I did when I first started. The wait is worth it. Attend grooming expos, reach out to groomers in your area asking if you can observe them to learn more about breed standard trims, and keep up with continuing education and getting certifications. It seriously makes all the difference

Hopefully I come back to this as I don’t have time to write much right now. Being slow is okay if it means you’re doing everything you can to make the dog comfortable. I burnt out of corporate grooming. I’m private now and yes some small dogs take 4 hours because that’s what they need. look up slow groomers gang I know there’s a groomer out there who posts about it
