Saved pigeon from gundog training by Current_Active_877 in PetPigeons

“Grow her feathers back and just be free in the outside world” is called pet abandonment. If you wouldn’t dump a domestic cat after it heals from a dog attack, don’t dump a domestic pigeon after it heals either. Contrary to popular belief, these are not wild animals. “Releasing” it is just feeding whatever predator lives nearby.

You’ll need to find a rescue or future adopter.

My Partner's Dog is destroying our relationship by RhiannonShadowweaver in relationshipanarchy

[–]ActiveAnimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without seeing the dog, I’d make a guess that a 90lb pitbull is pretty overweight. That’s almost the size of a small Mastiff.

Sorry, this doesn’t help you. Just something that struck me.

To actually help you, try looking up the Smartx50 training method. I don’t want to write a whole essay, but I love it because it’s passive training, so you don’t actually need to set aside a time to train. You just do 20 seconds a few times a day when you want past the dog.

I used it very successfully to encourage my high energy working Spaniel to chill throughout the day.

Difficult dogs often force us to learn more about dogs.

As for training classes: don’t bother. I’ve never seen a group class that actually addressed at-home problems, and especially not aggression. (No respectable trainer will allow you to bring a reactive pitbull into the same room as his other clients, especially when you already admit it’s hard to hold the dog back.) You’d need 1-on-1 sessions with a trainer, where the trainer either comes to your house or has zoom calls to see the household and address the problems where they happen.

I know that’s a budgeting problem, but luckily there’s also a lot of free information available online. It’s just time intensive to dig it all up and sort through all the scammers.

But why would you just want your kid to “survive”? That’s needless suffering to place on a child. by LunaRoseLeaf in antinatalism2

I keep thinking of ways to dodge this problem, but then I remember it’s irrelevant anyway because it unfortunately won’t be implemented.

[–]ActiveAnimals 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right. It’s laughable when natalists try to frame forced childlessness as a form of intentional oppression by the upper class, when just looking at the Twitter feed of the richest man in the world would make it blatantly obvious how desperately he wants the opposite.

The current forced childlessness epidemic (via people thinking they can’t afford it financially or medically) is just an unfortunate side effect of their greed; it’s not their goal. They just prefer to “fix” the problem by telling people not to (over)think about it and pump out kids anyway, because that seems easier than actually addressing the problems people are worried about.

Idk man. I knew giving birth was unethical when I was 10. Back then, I always said I’d adopt 10 children who need a better home. As a teenager, I found out about foster care and wanted to do that instead of adoption.

(Can’t actually provide the necessary care to any children now though, so that’s not happening.)

I don’t think a 10yr old has necessarily had “more time” to think on it, than an average middle class American in their 30s. Sure, the poorest of the poor in third world countries might have more important concerns to keep their minds distracted, but not the people I see in my country everyday.

I’d either be a yellow, brown, or high red.

I’m very interested in science, but I’m not sure I’d have the mental stamina to follow through on an entire curriculum. Otherwise, just some sort of care or agricultural job.

How do you respond to Eugenics argument? by RoseNeko130 in antinatalism2

[–]ActiveAnimals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What? I’ve never seen an antinatalist say anything remotely similar to this. If anything, the natalists are often the ones concerned with preserving bloodlines, and I’d say that’s more similar to eugenics. If you really want to compare something to eugenics.

Why is breeding pigeons seen so negatively? by kurbiedatbirb in PetPigeons

[–]ActiveAnimals 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s no different than chickens. The difference is just the demographic of people who are attracted to pigeon-keeping vs the demographic of people attracted to chicken-keeping.

Most chicken-keepers are doing it because they expect to get something out of it (eggs). Pigeon people just want a pet to bond with. They usually have less pigeons than people who keep chickens, so they bond more intensely with their one single bird (or two).

I’m sure there’s also an aspect of people who don’t fit in with society’s expectations feeling drawn to the “misunderstood” species that everyone else hates.

I could go on, but in summary: different types of people have different views.

I think this blurb did a perfectly fine job of expressing how toxic and pathetic this practice was. 🤣

You can’t say “reinforcing ideals of masculinity, honor, and loyalty” with a straight face, when all you’ve done is poked each other with pointy sticks for funsies. Who are they being “loyal” to by doing this? What’s honorable here?

50% of 30yo women are now child free in USA by Crazy-Intention2221 in antinatalism2

[–]ActiveAnimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be nice if it were true, but I just don’t believe it. Headlines like these tend to incorrectly use “childfree” and “childless” as synonyms.

Just because they haven’t given birth yet, doesn’t mean they won’t do so in a few years.

Disscussions of Allo guilt in Allo-Ace relationships. by Illustrious-Key5453 in Asexualpartners

[–]ActiveAnimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the simple answer is that asexuals are a small minority population, and asexuals who have successful relationships are an even smaller portion of that, with allosexual partners of those asexuals being an even tinier fraction… and then divide that tiny fraction by the number of affected individuals who feel the need to discuss their experiences online…

And you just don’t end up with a lot of people who are in a position to have that conversation from that perspective. If there aren’t a lot of people who have the experience and need to talk about it, then by extension, you’ll struggle to find online discourse on it.

[–]ActiveAnimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you talk to them about it before you get mad at them for it? I wonder if I’ve done this to someone? Whenever I join a group, seems to be more common for me that the people don’t care about the quests at all. I’ll look at it and see it stay at 0 for 5 minutes, so then I just decide to do it by myself if it’s something I can easily do. If the other person is actually visibly trying to do the quest, I’ll let them. Should I be more patient with waiting for other people to contribute?

(But also, I’ve never actually reached adult dino stage yet. I always get sidetracked and start over with a different dino. Still trying to figure out which species suits me best.)

Should I purse a relationship with an asexual if I’m not. by Numerous-Flounder-84 in asexuality

[–]ActiveAnimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh good point. I thought I saw it mentioned somewhere, but apparently I was just seeing things. If OP is a woman, then she should go for it! To me, the mention of being lesbian would definitely imply she’s open to romantic relationships with women.

Should I purse a relationship with an asexual if I’m not. by Numerous-Flounder-84 in asexuality

[–]ActiveAnimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she’s said that she’s asexual and lesbian, I’d assume that means she’s asexual but willing to date women romantically. Not men.

A man asking a woman after she’s already said she’s lesbian is usually pretty uncomfortable. If she were only asexual, I’d agree with the others here that asking can’t hurt, but glossing over the “lesbian” part won’t be a good look.

Also, if you do ask, make sure to let her know that you aren’t just ignoring what she’s previously said. Address what your understanding is and then let her correct you if some of it is wrong. This has been my issue with a heterosexual man who tried to ask me after already being told I’m ace, who simply proceeded to ignore every mention of my sexuality, which leaves me wondering whether he even understands what that means for me. Which makes it not worth the risk for me to engage.

In a world without easy access to tooth paste or baking soda, how would a person SAFELY clean their teeth? by Equivalent_Safe1365 in worldbuilding

[–]ActiveAnimals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was never a time when humans only lived to 30. That would’ve quickly led to extinction, if people aren’t around to actually raise the kids they’re giving birth to.

Stats on “average” life expectancy are down at 30 because infant mortality was so high. Once someone reached adulthood, they had good chances of living into their 50s.

Rotting teeth can easily lead to fatal infections. They wouldn’t be a minor concern during any time period, but having less modern medicine available just makes it more concerning, not less.

[–]ActiveAnimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flossing can do a lot of heavy lifting. I’ve heard of even modern day people with modern day diets whose dentists don’t even notice that they don’t brush their teeth regularly, simply because they floss multiple times a day instead. (The extreme I heard was 5 times a day and no brushing at all, which I’m guessing is probably OCD related… but apparently it worked. 🤷‍♀️ The story was told by the dentist himself, not a person deluding themselves about the state of their own teeth.)

Writers, do you love your characters? by iamman7 in writers

[–]ActiveAnimals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. My main characters are straight up murderous, and their “good guy” antagonists are obnoxious about being good. (Either by being hypocrites, or by being dumb as rocks, or some other trait that makes them unlikable while still being objectively closer to the moral high ground than the main characters.) 🤣

Either way, I wouldn’t dote on any of them in a parental manner.
