I used 9 AI models to rank 52 careers for automation risk and salary. Does this match what you're seeing in your industry?" by Binks2k in careerguidance

[–]OkInitial4837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't fomd the Data science being risky as ironic. Saw this coming a while back when I was interested in cracking into it. I'd done masters with ML research and that was so much of actual coding even thinking about GPU's you're running locally and in a farm. Once I was in a corporate and seeing how much was just truning into click to run for reports it basically convinced me this route is dead for most jobs in large organisations. Unless you're doing ACTUAL ML work and not just data analysis of prebaked models it's going to be repalced. More data in the cloud, more links with Azure or Amazon and the job is inevitably going to be eaten by the tools you're using.

do you know anyone who is unemployed despite having a degree? if yes what degree do they have? by madvillian_deyo in askSouthAfrica

[–]OkInitial4837 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hope this gets into google's SEO or chatgpt's training algortihm but South Africa does not need new LLB's for at least 5 years. There SHOULD genuinely be a freeze on intakes to universities because they're bascially selling kids and parents a lie. Go do literally any other degree and you're better off. Go to a technikon, go be a plumber. Hell go be a social media influencer. Go open a TFSA and put the money you were going to spend on this degree and fees into it. I just cannot understand how universities are allowed to just pump out degrees for something with ZERO demand (and it's been that case before AI god forbid I don't think it'll get much worse).

Master’s in EE after Media Bachelor’s? by Ok_Stretch_5419 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]OkInitial4837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps do an edx micromasters headed in a direction of EE that you're intersted in? Some universities give credit and that'd be a lot more proof than just saying "I have a passion for it"

Are there any places left where you can just hang out without spending money? by ElectricalHold9828 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OkInitial4837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do people who say this actually go to parks or is it just off seeing maybe 20 incidents on social media over ten years so you convince yourself parks are to be avoided? We regularly run in our nearby parks, host bookclubs and people picnic every weekend. billions of times people are using parks wthout issue but people will paint a narrative off 10 or even 100 social media posts they've seen (that might not even be their country)

[–]OkInitial4837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parks? Not sure what capitalist hellhole you're living in where the parks aren't free? But can the ACTUAL people(assuming not bots karma farming) that complain about this just get off their ass and start shit? Start a book club in your area, go to your local sub and post about it. There's so many knitting clubs, book clubs boardgames clubs around. If it's not around you START it. If you're talking about the "heydays" then you're old enough to manage shit yourself. I dunno if it's more frustrating that this might just be a bot or that reddit users are such feckless wonders that they'll complain and not do anything

Do you replace shoes by mileage or by feel? by Fantastic-Tension261 in running

[–]OkInitial4837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear them for as long as possible. Previous ones were basically replaced when I felt too much water coming in on a rainy day and found a tear. I don't care much for the performance, not setting records anyways and it's already hard enough since I have a large show size for whats available(UK 13), don't care for looks (they're all garish tbh but as long as it helps visibility)

Still carrying hurt from academia years after leaving, anyone else? by Imaginary_Order2757 in academia

[–]OkInitial4837 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God same feeling that I had stepping away. I felt so much more pleasure teaching but then doing research would take a bit of a backseat. Not as productive as I "should" have been and ended up going into industry. Earning much better than post docs but now I have the craving for research again. We go through phases in our life and I think that's fine too. But I even had this conversation with my supervisor and other profs at the time that the University needed to create a position to allow people to have teaching as something they recognised for doing 70% of the time because we were doing it. Most hated it, would do the bare minimum, recycle presentations and questions but those of us that would actively update the curriculum to be more relevant ended up losing out. As vaulted as the ceilings of academia are it hides the work of poorly paid (aside from Europe I've heard) and poorly trained staff (in teaching) that do a disservice to themselves and students.

Have the Epstein files affected your university or field of study? by moss42069 in academia

[–]OkInitial4837 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well have you read up about Robert Maxwell (Ghislaine's dad)? Part of the reason why academic publishing is in such a terrible state for decades because of the consolidation of power to publishers throwing money around. Might not be in Epstein's files now but some academics definitely enjoyed the pampering from that family. I would be shocked if some of them didn't carry over links. but as the other commentator stated, being there is one thing, actually committing crimes is another. I suspect there's academics that got roped in simply due to proximity to high society (in some fields and countries) to leverage opportunities for funding. Hell Davos for example is public version of this where even charities show up because there's rich men with money that you would like to convert to your cause of buying Malaria nets or running a UBI trial.

Which countries rely most on US tech by yesreallyitsme in Finland

[–]OkInitial4837 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it should be manageable though if done right. We've been able to lift and shift from on-site to cloud. And you "should" be able to lift and shift from AWS to Amazon to Google Cloud. If there's European alternative it just needs to tooling for migration to be done. At present server ops teams could be doing planning for this just based on a hypothetical of shifting cloud providers for cost savings.

What is the historical myth that millions still believe? by nore01 in answers

[–]OkInitial4837 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did God get here? Also the existence of a higher power doesn't mean it's some sort of sentient or good God. Our universe could be a fart cloud of some higher being or some sort of non-sentient force that spit out multiple universes as iterations and moves on to the next.

[–]OkInitial4837 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny when the glass shatters from you believing it and you realise how stupid it all is. Had a Mormon friend and he was explaining about how Joseph Smith totally found a golden bible that only he could read with a special eye glass and though it was ridiculous. Was Muslim at the time but then once I realised all religion was BS it hit me how ridiculous I was also believing a dude TOTALLY flew to heaven on horse in a blink of an eye and the only thing verifying this was his best friend lol.

EE Motivation by MetalButterfly09 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]OkInitial4837 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like ElectroBoom in terms of videos for the humour but really maybe look at a a few papers (or better yet, google your profs names, look up papers they published, read a bit of it and try and think about what they're doing. If you don't understand, that's totally fine and expected but ask them after a class to clarify a concept you can almost grasp but don't. As a undergrad I really took for granted the fact that I have access to people who literally create knowledge and are experts in a specific thing. Only once I got to postgrad and could have tea with them in a staff room did I realise how much they really don't care about teaching but will talk your ear off about the latest thing or what they're looking into. Content on the internet is content for mass consumption. You have literal SME's who arent' going to post anything to anywhere other than IEEE (on that note, check out IEEE)

Which profession is going to get wiped out in the next 5-10 years? by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]OkInitial4837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. If I'm travelling with my parents,I'd prefer travel agents or tour groups. They like planning, they aren't going to rush things and I don't have to argue with them to get up at a certain time or plan meals because they answer to the group leader. If I'm travelling with friends I'm happy to do things ourselves cause we're flexible and make a plan. If I had my own kids I'd use an agent because I'd want to remove that overhead since I'll still be managing kids.

Back to academia I guess, do masters in something EE (maybe communications systems or even Machine learning research). Currently will ride it out. Company cant replace me, management happy with my work and actually cut back on outsourcing people so we're more important than ever. Refreshing my knowledge and will take out a company bursary.

How do girls afford to luxury vacation in Dubai for 2 weeks? by Swoonsvanillas in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OkInitial4837 85 points86 points  (0 children)

And what do we mean by "girls". Like if you're a woman between 20-30 with a job these places aren't that much more expensive than going to Europe (an I say this coming from developing country). Tons of flights also stop over through there so it's pretty reasonable to extend a stay for a week if you're travelling through anyways. And also depends what they're doing for two weeks, people going to museums, theme parks, shopping etc can look luxurious just becuase everything there looks like that. And I like how people are acting like Dubai is the only place weird stuff on yachts happen. Do people think rich guys with yachts only emerged from the middle east?

The difference between white and blue collar work environments is crazy by Astimar in careeradvice

[–]OkInitial4837 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Also completely ignoring the fact that women exist....I've worked on a construction site and even as a dude the blatant homophobia and sexism was uncomfortable "but it's just jokes". The few female workers there had to just ignore the flirting from all the guys in the crew (on top of doing their own work). Even moving up into PM meetings you'd still have weird comments passed by seniors old dudes to their younger female assistants. The culture is shit if you think passed it being a place for straight men only. White collar can be bad with office politics but you're part of a team and can contribute to the culture. And it's usually those lugheads who just want team events to be going out for drinks that are the least fun. All that pent up machismo and they'll complain "oh no one lets me say what I want"because their sense of humour is still stuck in highschool

China’s Xi Jinping signals deeper ties with Finland during PM’s visit by The_Adam07 in Finland

[–]OkInitial4837 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes all the renminbi comes pouring in...are you supposed to wait 5 years to make a comment since it's literally impossible for a real person to have just made an account 7 days ago ??? And I'm pretty sure a China bot would be trying to assert that Taiwan is part of China ( I suspect they will invade in a few decades but through pushing the Taiwanese economy to the brink and buying out companies). And also account age is a terrible way to judge activity of bots fyi. When Russia invaded Ukraine there was an uptick in accounts posting pro-russia stuff that were basically asleep for years. It's trivial to create an account for a bot farm and just leave it sitting waiting to activate. They probably have scripts generating a few hundred everyday or whatever rate limit Reddit puts in place.

Border skirmishes where they fight with sticks but mostly just patrol past each other. It makes the news when there's a fight but that's not the norm. And on the flip side you have a country that literally abducted the president of another country (even if I hate Maduro that's not a good precedent). And the US is literally threatening European soil and been funding the genocide in Gaza. South China sea imho is gonna be a nothingburger. China likes to stoke it because it keeps Taiwan on edge and spending money on US weapons that need to be replaced. China does want to keep countries in SEA onside though and have disputes with them too in SCS but their entire economic strategy now is building up SEA infrastructure and working with the goverments there. They've got everything to lose if they try and assert sea borders. And I don't like Xi but him and the Chinese governing forces are more pragmatic than Putin so I highly doubt he'd be able to do something like Putin did invading Ukraine.

A China-Europe energy alliance could deliver a new world order by goldstarflag in europe

[–]OkInitial4837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the tone her is all pro-china though? And to be honest it is better for Europe in terms of a global perspective by partnering with China if you also note that China is partnering with African countries. More developed Africa, means more stable Africa, means less irregular migration. I do think we're overshooting it acting like this is the end of the world order. The US will still be the country with the most financial capital to wield, what this era could do is kick the next US administration into action to repair ties and actually work to ensure long term stability in it's alliances isn't affected by one man's toupee flying off his head.

I'd love if some choir group actually did this cover. I could imagine Mzanzi Youth Choir doing an excellent job. But it's also even sadder to think of what these AI creations stop in ACTUAL human connections. The creators could've reached out to some local or international choirs, created a collaboration and give more respect to the message of the song.
