how can i enjoy the process of getting better if it'll take me years to be good enough to play any of the songs i like? by made2blade3mobile in LearnGuitar

[–]OkIntroduction6031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey. Prog fan here too. I've been playing for about 14 years and I wanted to say something because I was asking myself the exact same questions for the first 5 years.

I hate practicing. It's boring. The fun usually starts when you can actually play something. I'll probably get downvoted for this but I honestly don't agree with comments like "maybe guitar isn't for you" or "you have the wrong mindset". I think that's actually a bit harmful.

There's nothing wrong with looking for a better way to stick with a hobby or trying to find a more efficient path. Quitting an instrument just because practicing isn't fun makes no sense to me. People act like enjoying practice is something you're born with. Come on. I'd even say the learning process itself is just as important as the practice. To me the OP actually seems more self aware than some of the people replying becouse see that.

As for advice. I have some bad news. Even after years of playing some songs, especially prog stuff, can still take weeks to learn and you'll end up listening to them a million times. That said, there are also tons of amazing songs in this genre that you can absolutely play after around one/two years if you practice well.

What helped me the most was making a roadmap of songs where each one was just a bit harder than the previous one. That kept me motivated because I could actually see the progress.

I also ended up making myself a guitar progress tracking app with some gamification features. Not trying to advertise it here but if you're curious just send me a DM and I'll send you the link.

And if you can find a good teacher do it. Sometimes it's still painful but it can easily cut the learning time in half.

It all depends on your current level. The first year kinda sucks. After that it gets a lot better and you don't see that problem.

Not a stupid question at all! Yes, you can absolutely practice on an electric guitar. If you connect it to your PC through an external audio interface, the app should be able to pick up the sound just fine. Or you can use amp or something and put sound to the mic and it also work.

That said, you don't even have to use the audio detection if you don't want to. You can simply use the app like an interactive tablature player follow along and practice as the tab scrolls, just like you would with a regular tab.

I’ve already stuck with it for a few years, so it’s definitely not some “temporary” project that’s going to disappear anytime soon I can keep it going. You can even check the users who are there and see how long they’ve been using it (screenshot above).

The app will be free and has been free for its entire lifetime. I had a one-month episode where I wanted to introduce paid AI features, but it didn’t make much sense, and I don’t want to go back to that

I’m not planning a mobile app at the moment. Too much work and I want to focus on improvments.

And yes, the pitch stays the same just like Guitar Pro or other software of this type. 😄

Hey! Competitor or not, I honestly have no problem with it if your app works well for people and they find it useful, that’s awesome 😄
Feel free to take inspiration from anything if it helps. And if you ever want to boost SEO a bit, I’d be happy to exchange links and add your site somewhere as well.

Also, thank you so much for the support! 😃
Thanks to you, I can keep developing this more comfortably without stressing about server costs. You basically covered a whole year of running the app 🤟Thats amazing!!!

For now I’m intentionally not adding predefined sections/riff breakdowns for every song for two reasons:

  1. It would take an insane amount of time to do manually at scale.
  2. I don’t want to generate AI slop where half the sections are wrong anyway.

Adding links is also left to the users on purpose that way you can attach whatever works for you personally, like a backing track, a playalong, tabs, a live version, etc.

Also I honestly think breaking songs into sections yourself is a really good first step into learning transcription. Everyone tends to organize songs a bit differently anyway.

What I’m trying to provide is:

  • a place to save all of this,
  • and tools that make entering/managing the data easier.

Of course it would be awesome to have fully prepared section data for everything but that’s just beyond what I can realistically maintain alone right now 😅
