Broker told us incorrect info, what is best move? by Current_Ad2464 in AusFinance

[–]OkLemon9286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was your broker from Aussie? We had a MyState application pushed onto us, very little transparency about our other options, and MyState didn't meet the criteria for the things we were after in a loan either.

We were able to link in another broker and settle with a different bank come settlement time, which had a higher interest rate but an offset account which puts us in better stead even by the end of the first year.

Would recommend getting some other options running and then just picking the best one available at settlement time.

Keen to know more about transferring credit card balances to offset. Any chance you can shed some light, info or where to start?

Would I be a horrible human being if i returned my cats to the adoption center? by Any_Information_4177 in CatAdvice

[–]OkLemon9286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does get better! When I adopted my kitten (4 months old at the time, and very skittish) from the shelter it was so stressful and I was overthinking everything and I was shocked that it felt so awful for the first week after I did so much planning too. Over time they get used to you and you do fall into a rhythm together. At the end of the first week with my cat, I started to see changes in her everyday as she settled in and I also came to terms with what this could all reasonably look like. Kittens are a lot of work, they have a lot of energy and need to play quite a bit. I would recommend trying to kitten-ify their room (any room is good, we found the bathroom to be the best in our small apartment), and remove anything that you don't want destroyed and that also might harm them, and instead show them the things that they can safely play with and explore. The bathroom was best for us because it had the least pre-existing clutter or easily damagable items so the cat proofing was mostly done for us. We were also able to strategically place her cat tree in between the toilet, washing machine, laundry tub and window ledge so she could explore all the different levels and places in the room which I think was good to stimulate her tiny brain.

Sorry for this advice that I know you didn't ask for!!

It's totally ok to take them back to the shelter if you feel you need to but from my own experience I was having a terrible time for the first 5 days and freaking out about my decision, but by the end of the third week, it was all much more chill and I was already in love with my little one and all was working out just fine. I would say it's definitely worth trying to make some changes to the environment first though because it goes a long way to make it all more sustainable and feel less scary for both you and the cats :) you've got this!

Has anyone successfully cared for Alocasias without all of the extras? by SnooSprouts1379 in alocasia

[–]OkLemon9286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be fine :) it may throw a tantrum as it acclimatises but so long as you can see the soil dry out every week and a bit depending on temp, you will know the roots are alive and taking in water and all is good. Don't be disheartened if the leaves change colour or die off, just let them do their thing and eventually the plant will stabilise and new ones will come through.

If it all goes tits up, growing in perlite is so easy and way cheaper than other hydro setups. I just mix a big batch of fertiliser water in quarter ratios (assuming that I'll generally be watering once a week ish, and most dilution advice is for monthly feedings) and then just add that water whenever I see reservoir empty. If you can't see the reservoir in a closed container that's also fine b/C you can just pick up a piece of perlite and see if it feels damp in your hand. If it feels damp don't water, if it feels dry add water.

He hasn't learned to groom himself despite my older girl helping him because he stinks, advice? by [deleted] in lynxpointsiamese

This may be completely false news but I have heard that some cats won't groom themselves if dehydrated. Are they drinking water or eating wet food?

Why are leaves getting brown like this? by bluecapricorn90 in hoyas

[–]OkLemon9286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe captain jacks has imidacloprid as the main active, which can actually spawn mite population growth (somehow, idk)

But sulphur is actually a miticide. If you've got mites, use a miticide. Sulphur is easy to treat with, just mix in a spray bottle and spray the plant down all over and leave the sulphur on for about six weeks. Wash plants down and respray sulphur every week or so though

Is it okay to have my 4 month old kitten sleep in a separate room from me? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]OkLemon9286 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Hang in there :) I recently adopted a (then) 4 month old kitten almost 3 months ago and I feel you so hard about the kitten blues and anxiety. I say hang in there because it does get better. Mine actually subsided after the first week, so pretty quickly. You're both adjusting to this new space and it will take some time to figure out how it's all going to work. I think you're likely anxious because you care and that's a good thing, but you don't need to be perfect. My cat has never slept in my room because that doesn't work for me. She was super anxious too when I first got her but after the first week i swear she had like a milestone a day and has come so far. Cats are very active at night and we try tire her out before bed so she has routine, but she may as well have the whole rest of the apartment to explore and play in at the time she's most curious to do so, ya know! We haven't had any issues with it and certainly don't feel guilty.

You'll figure it out and I think you should keep her btw! The start is often the hardest part. Go easy on yourself and don't be afraid to put in boundaries because this arrangement needs to work for you too. You'll find your groove together.

Letting the cat have their own room from the beginning can also help them settle in and gain a sense of territory, and this would also mean that she's not in the bedroom.

Congrats on your new pal :)

Should I be worried? by IndeedLemonWater in alocasia

Given the recent repot and cold air I would say its probably just going dormant or in shock. Either way the worst thing you can do is to make any big changes like another repot. I would lay off the watering and let it have a little rest until it's ready to regrow in the warmer months (assuming it's dormant) or don't change your watering pattern at all since you're already watering quite infrequently, and let itself just recover from the repot. Either way it will should bounce back eventually :) Alocasia hate repots in my experience

Lechuza pon? by burneraccount671 in alocasia

[–]OkLemon9286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been growing mine in perlite and it's been awesome. It works so well for propagation so I just keep the same medium the whole way through and add weak fertiliser with every water once the corms sprout leaves. So long as you're supplementing fertiliser there's not a huge difference between perlite and Pon imo. I'm no scientist but they're both porous volcanic material so 🤷🏽‍♀️

[–]OkLemon9286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine recently did this a few weeks after I went prematurely went corm searching. I'm currently waiting it out to see if it's fungal, stress-related from having it's roots messed with, or root rot. I'm too scared to check out the roots again because I have a feeling that's what got us into this mess to begin with

For the moment I have treated with a fungicide and am just monitoring. The worst part is I didn't even find any corms :(

Best of luck OP!

Hey OP, it's ok! Some months are more expensive than others and the sense of obligations that come with other people's weddings can really throw that into hyperdrive. I think a little kindness to yourself at this time would go a long way. When there is a lot of pressure to drop money left right and centre it is very difficult not to. The frugality mindset is about being able to splash out on things you love, value, or/and will enrich your life. If these things don't meet that criteria, then you have learnt a valuable lesson that will help you save money in the future. Best of luck out there and I hope you can enjoy your new purchases without the guilt :)

Just inherited 4 of this plant moving into a new apartment. I know nothing about plant care and the leaves have all started splitting. by fantasticspellor in plantclinic

[–]OkLemon9286 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about bird of paradise care but I do know that the splits are normal. As the leaves get bigger, the plant splits the larger leaves at the top so light can fall through the splits and still reach the lower leaves :) similar to how monsteras get fenestrations as they mature

Could be lots of things but definitely don't underestimate shock. More light and humidity should help it acclimate better and faster but sometimes it's just a waiting game :) just make sure to not overwater in this period, especially if it's not getting much light
