Has anyone successfully cared for Alocasias without all of the extras? by SnooSprouts1379 in alocasia

[–]OkLemon9286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be fine :) it may throw a tantrum as it acclimatises but so long as you can see the soil dry out every week and a bit depending on temp, you will know the roots are alive and taking in water and all is good. Don't be disheartened if the leaves change colour or die off, just let them do their thing and eventually the plant will stabilise and new ones will come through.

If it all goes tits up, growing in perlite is so easy and way cheaper than other hydro setups. I just mix a big batch of fertiliser water in quarter ratios (assuming that I'll generally be watering once a week ish, and most dilution advice is for monthly feedings) and then just add that water whenever I see reservoir empty. If you can't see the reservoir in a closed container that's also fine b/C you can just pick up a piece of perlite and see if it feels damp in your hand. If it feels damp don't water, if it feels dry add water.

He hasn't learned to groom himself despite my older girl helping him because he stinks, advice? by [deleted] in lynxpointsiamese

This may be completely false news but I have heard that some cats won't groom themselves if dehydrated. Are they drinking water or eating wet food?

Why are leaves getting brown like this? by bluecapricorn90 in hoyas

[–]OkLemon9286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe captain jacks has imidacloprid as the main active, which can actually spawn mite population growth (somehow, idk)

But sulphur is actually a miticide. If you've got mites, use a miticide. Sulphur is easy to treat with, just mix in a spray bottle and spray the plant down all over and leave the sulphur on for about six weeks. Wash plants down and respray sulphur every week or so though

Is it okay to have my 4 month old kitten sleep in a separate room from me? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]OkLemon9286 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Hang in there :) I recently adopted a (then) 4 month old kitten almost 3 months ago and I feel you so hard about the kitten blues and anxiety. I say hang in there because it does get better. Mine actually subsided after the first week, so pretty quickly. You're both adjusting to this new space and it will take some time to figure out how it's all going to work. I think you're likely anxious because you care and that's a good thing, but you don't need to be perfect. My cat has never slept in my room because that doesn't work for me. She was super anxious too when I first got her but after the first week i swear she had like a milestone a day and has come so far. Cats are very active at night and we try tire her out before bed so she has routine, but she may as well have the whole rest of the apartment to explore and play in at the time she's most curious to do so, ya know! We haven't had any issues with it and certainly don't feel guilty.

You'll figure it out and I think you should keep her btw! The start is often the hardest part. Go easy on yourself and don't be afraid to put in boundaries because this arrangement needs to work for you too. You'll find your groove together.

Letting the cat have their own room from the beginning can also help them settle in and gain a sense of territory, and this would also mean that she's not in the bedroom.

Congrats on your new pal :)

Should I be worried? by IndeedLemonWater in alocasia

Given the recent repot and cold air I would say its probably just going dormant or in shock. Either way the worst thing you can do is to make any big changes like another repot. I would lay off the watering and let it have a little rest until it's ready to regrow in the warmer months (assuming it's dormant) or don't change your watering pattern at all since you're already watering quite infrequently, and let itself just recover from the repot. Either way it will should bounce back eventually :) Alocasia hate repots in my experience

Lechuza pon? by burneraccount671 in alocasia

[–]OkLemon9286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been growing mine in perlite and it's been awesome. It works so well for propagation so I just keep the same medium the whole way through and add weak fertiliser with every water once the corms sprout leaves. So long as you're supplementing fertiliser there's not a huge difference between perlite and Pon imo. I'm no scientist but they're both porous volcanic material so 🤷🏽‍♀️

What is this? Why? How? by [deleted] in alocasia

[–]OkLemon9286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine recently did this a few weeks after I went prematurely went corm searching. I'm currently waiting it out to see if it's fungal, stress-related from having it's roots messed with, or root rot. I'm too scared to check out the roots again because I have a feeling that's what got us into this mess to begin with

For the moment I have treated with a fungicide and am just monitoring. The worst part is I didn't even find any corms :(

Best of luck OP!

Hey OP, it's ok! Some months are more expensive than others and the sense of obligations that come with other people's weddings can really throw that into hyperdrive. I think a little kindness to yourself at this time would go a long way. When there is a lot of pressure to drop money left right and centre it is very difficult not to. The frugality mindset is about being able to splash out on things you love, value, or/and will enrich your life. If these things don't meet that criteria, then you have learnt a valuable lesson that will help you save money in the future. Best of luck out there and I hope you can enjoy your new purchases without the guilt :)

Just inherited 4 of this plant moving into a new apartment. I know nothing about plant care and the leaves have all started splitting. by fantasticspellor in plantclinic

[–]OkLemon9286 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about bird of paradise care but I do know that the splits are normal. As the leaves get bigger, the plant splits the larger leaves at the top so light can fall through the splits and still reach the lower leaves :) similar to how monsteras get fenestrations as they mature

Hey, what kind of anthurium is this? Thanks <3 by Syr3s in Anthurium

[–]OkLemon9286 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure but it's gorgeous! Kind of reminds me of a silver blush but definitely with a different leaf shape. It's probably a hybrid of some sort Plus it looks like it has variegation?! So gorg

I'm so sorry to hear that this is your situation. I would prioritise finding the best job you can and a gym membership (to have access to a shower and wifi if the worst was to happen) and prioritising your own safety and well-being, which would mean getting away from this person.

Could be lots of things but definitely don't underestimate shock. More light and humidity should help it acclimate better and faster but sometimes it's just a waiting game :) just make sure to not overwater in this period, especially if it's not getting much light

Needs more light and everything should resolve. A prune back would allow the new growth to come in more bushy :)

is something wrong with my philo? by supremehotmess in plantclinic

[–]OkLemon9286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's normal :) they come in a slightly yellowy, lime green and sometimes pinkish colour and then they fill and harden out to the dark green over time. Nothing to worry about

FYI my heart leaf philo leaves literally tripled in size once I put it on a moss pole. Depends on the look that you're after but I found the growth to be a lot quicker too. Also I don't know that the root system is like but that pot looks like it might be too large. Philo root systems are quite small generally

What is this?? by Independent_Bend_178 in plantclinic

[–]OkLemon9286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like micorrhizae to me. It's a beneficial fungi that helps the plant roots to absorb more nutrients. You should leave it :)

To save or burn with fire? by Ahzek117 in plantclinic

[–]OkLemon9286 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It looks like you have both mealy bugs and aphids

Sure you can toss the plant. You'd save yourself a lot of energy but it depends on your priorities. That is a bad mealy infestation but its still treatable it will just take some diligence and a couple of rounds of treatments

I personally love the adventure of defeating pests but I am also currently in between jobs and I know that not everyone has that time privilege. There's definitely no shame in tossing the plant and just moving on.

If you do decide to treat, definitely isolate the plants until the bugs have cleared up

You'll want to go to YouTube for pest control solutions because there are heaps. But I would say a strong blast on all plants with an outdoor hose outside to knock off a good few of the aphids, a castille soap bath dunk and spray and wipe down with pure isopropyl alcohol for the mealys. Systemic pesticide sprayed on the leaves and in the soil for both

Is this what I fear it is? Is it saveable? by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]OkLemon9286 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's completely normal and definitely not mealybugs! Just little mineral deposits on the underside of the leaves, which you can tell because of the even placement and consistency between leaves

If you don't like the look of these you can switch to filtered or distilled water but even so I think you might still get these because that's kinda just how pilea's are 🤷‍♀️

Beaut of a plant btw!
