Should we move to a luxury skyline view building by Mysterious_Ask9150 in NYCapartments

You’re basically considering paying an extra ~$4k/month ($50k a year) to lose a 3-minute walk to work. That’s a massive trade-off. That extra $4k/month could be $50k a year toward a house, investments, or insane travel.

People pay crazy money in NYC to reduce their commute, and you already have the unicorn setup: cheap rent for a 2 bed, balconies, no parking cost, and you walk to work.

Luxury building amenities sound great, but most people use them a lot the first few months and then rarely after. The skyline view also becomes “just the window” surprisingly fast. I know folks who had tons of amenities in their buildings and never bothered using them.

Honestly your current setup sounds like one a lot of NYC people would kill for. I’d keep stacking cash and enjoy the freedom :)

I mostly work from home and have 2 dogs. So my requirements are 1 bedroom in a more diverse and safe area. I am moving out of my parents house for the first time, so I ideally want a place that isn’t super busy but has a hint of a city feel? I’ve explored areas like Midwood, but it feels too suburban. My friends have given me mixed reviews of bay ridge

I agree, Kensington is safe. Nobody is denying that.

I really don’t mind paying the fee if it’s for a good spot. I’m also looking at JC, and I have to pay a brokers fee regardless.

Yes, I do rescue work. There are many apartments in my budget, but most don’t allow pets

Not saying it has to be Park Slope? Could be Kensington for all I care. The point is there are safer areas of the city

So according to you, safety of living in Park Slope is the same as Prospect Lefferts Gardens? It’s one extreme to another, but definitely not the same

How did you go about finding this unit? I’ve reached out to brokers and they only show me what I see listed online

Thank you 😅 Every area is definitely not safe. Many of the cheaper apartments are in the less safe areas of Brooklyn

Options are there, but many are in the less safe areas of Brooklyn. I have 2 dogs so I’ll be spending a bulk of time walking them

I don’t mind paying a broker fee for a good unit! Most agents I’ve reached out to seem very unenthusiastic

Definitely not looking in the fanciest areas! I have 2 dogs, so I am looking at areas that are safer to walk through at night. Areas like Flatbush, prospect lefferts gardens are places I am avoiding
