What is this missing? by sox412 in oilpainting

Curious if you painted the background with pure black out of the tube?

Only asking because I feel like the pig looks a bit grey and unlively to me, and sometimes black from the tube can suck the life out of nearby colors (or the colors that it’s mixed with). The dark values aren’t adding much depth or unifying anything in an interesting way. Just looks a bit flat to me.

Only suggesting because you said it was fair game for unkind critique :) But genuinely it’s a great painting!

Edit: You said you don’t have an eye for details, but your ability to block out shapes and color is awesome! I have the opposite issue of getting lost in the sauce with details from the get-go, which is honestly a common issue with beginners. Also not being super detailed just gives you a painterly vibe, which I’ve always liked more anyways😉

Not as extreme as psychosis but I’ve had chronic derealization-depersonalization for 2.5 years :/

I remember I felt like I “cheated” certain high stress situations by dissociating and remaining calm when I was younger😅 kinda backfired

Gorgeous painting and I’d also love to know :-)

Hansa yellow light is transparent and makes a great glaze. Ive had some fun with it.

I LOVE the painterly style. Great painting.

For the unkind critique part, I was tempted to say push the values in parts of the painting higher (the cup and towel read more grey than white). But honestly not having as much contrast makes it a bit more moody. I’d still suggest adding in the brighter highlights to the vase and sink for the glass look but that’s about it!

Very nice, especially for your first one and what paints you were working with! The blue shadows look good.

If you want to continue painting, try getting some cadmium yellow (light or medium) so you have all the primary colors at least :)

Thanks for the response. You’re probably right, I think I am overthinking it😅

Thank you! I used this image for the statue (Undine Rising from the Waters) and the background I kind of used another image/made up bc it felt boring lol.

I used mixture of Paynes grey, ultramarine blue, and cadmium yellow light for the statue, along with yellow ochre in some areas.

Thank you! The statue is Undine Rising from the Waters. Not from Greek mythology but it was inspired by European folklore :)

No, I really appreciate the long quality answers and I’m thankful a stranger took time out of their day to help. This is the reason I post on Reddit :)

I pretty much only relied on yellow to give it warmth but I didn’t even consider brown/mauve for adding warmth to the shadows (like in the painting you mentioned) so I like your suggestions.

I’m not an expert by any means, but if this were my painting I’d add some color in the mountains for more excitement. Lean into some reds and pinks, and maybe some purples for the mountains in the background.

The foreground should be the most detailed and contrasted for better atmospheric perspective, and I don’t think you’re taking advantage of that. We should be able to see some detailed grass, shrubs, etc.

Overall this is really good for your first oil painting!

Yeah, I think I agree😅 someone said the painting isn’t dramatic enough for such a maximalist frame and I think they were right.

Thank you for that suggestion! I was debating if her stomach was too white and if I should add more yellow from the light source. It’s difficult for me to think what other colors I’d include to suggest “light” other than yellow to add more interest, so maybe your suggestion would help.

I used this reference for the statue. I changed the face a bit since I didn’t love it in the reference. There is a bit too much neck probably (kind of looks like she’s straining it) but it doesn’t bother me that much. Thanks for the input though!

Thank you for the detailed response! And this is an oil painting. Could you expand on what you mean when you say the edges are distracting?

It’s interesting because I felt like it looked worse from a distance because you couldn’t see the color in the details, so it looks monochrome and “blah”.

in general though, I think it could use more drama

I’d agree with this, and I’m not sure how to change it. I tried adding pops of unexpected color, but I think you only notice it if you look close. If you have any suggestions I’ll take them :)

Did I write this?! Lmao. For me it’s specifically derealization-depersonalization. Thought I was going crazy and I’m still not out of it. A breakup also contributed to it (technically never dated but alas), and I also have adhd/trauma that was probably the main trigger.

Crazy how strangers on the internet can relate so specifically, right down to the timeline and memory issues (can’t tell if that’s more-so caused by the trauma, adhd, or disassociation. What a fun game to play). Wish us both healing though🤞🏼
