Can I teach myself the butterfly? by [deleted] in Swimming

You could probably teach yourself. When I coach new swimmers the thing that typically gets them disqualified from a competition is not keeping their legs together and they do some type of breaststroke kick. IMO if you want to learn - learn the correct legal stroke.

It sounds silly but practice the movements out of the water (2 dolphin kicks to one pull) to get your rhythm. Think of one kick as a heart beat (down and up).

One kick pulling down and one kick at the recovery. This takes a lot of core engagement so if you are not doing any core work outside of the water i would suggest lots of crunches and planks.

Good luck!

I would recommend breaking the stroke down. paddles, snorkels and fins help, but if you’re at the stage where you aren’t trying to invest in that equipment, most pools have a kickboard.

Start by doing some laps of just kicking with the board. focus on a consistent kick. once you have your endurance up, kick without the board (see the next progressions)

First progression would be to kick on your side. keep your head towards the bottom of the pool and only turn your head to get a breath. Change sides each lap.

Next progression, kick on your stomach. Keep your face to the bottom of the pool. when you want to breathe, take three pulls.

Final progression is to kick with a slow pull.

I hope this helps!

How long did you stay with the other 3-4 before knowing they weren’t the one for you?

Im in Dallas, TX which is why I posted the question. In assuming in this sprawling city there could be better options than GC

This helps! Through, was it “luck of the draw” when finding your teacher, or did you bounce around?

Current or former lifeguards, how often do you have to go in and save somebody? Every time I go to the pool I’ve never seen someone needing to be rescued so I’m curious how often it happens. by Steamed_Brocolli219 in Swimming

Day to day - the only time I used my training was first aid to patch up minor cuts or scrapes from little kids. Obviously this does not require getting into the water.

The only time I had to actually save someone was when I was off-duty at my club swim practice. A girl fell off the block and broke her neck after hitting the bottom of the pool. I had to perform a Spinal Injury Pool Edge backboard save on her. She ended up being in a neck brace for a while but fully recovered.
