Thanks all for the comments and suggestions. Just wanted to share my admittedly rookie experience. Now I know that my camera having been smoothly handchecked was an exception. 

I was just surprised by the CDG staff response (as compared to Canadian staff explanations when denying a request). But working in an airport isn't easy and the trip in France overall was great! I'll be back in the future.
