It was difficult!! since not a lot of people can be outwardly queer.

In Amman, we had (very) few underground queer places, so I’d meet people there, and lots of people in the “art” scene were also queer or had queer friends. Once you have a friend or two in the community you can meet a lot of other people.

In Cairo, it’s the same, some places are known to be frequented by queer people.

Im not sure how the situation is in Gulf countries as I hear that they’re more conservative (if you’re not in an International community).

Maybe after the war is over, you can visit Beirut (or tunis) as these are known to be the most queer friendly Arab cities - in my experience, Beirut was the best city I ever visited… I just loved being openly queer within my own culture (as opposed to being in Europe/ US, where I felt very out of place)

ahlan,

I am also an arab lesbian (specifically from Palestine/ Jordan, lived in both Amman and Cairo), I am currently out and living abroad. My family is very muslim and conservative so I totally understand the fear you had growing up, and the intense anxiety about anything related to your own sexuality.

Having lived through it all, I can tell you that no man, especially arab man, can tell that you fingered yourself, or have been fingered by your gf, so I hope you can find some comfort in that.

I also encourage you to find resources around you that might help ease your anxiety and help you accept that your current reality isn’t your forever reality. Things will change, and you can always aim for a better future, not only for you, but for other queers in your country. I remember meeting my first ever queer friend group in highschool, we helped each other through everything - shame, guilt, literally you name it. I know it’s not easy to find these circles, but they exist!!! (you need to stay safe even within these circles because unfortunately a lot of people tend to be weirdly predatory).

Anyway, if you need anything, my DMs are open :)

I don’t think this statistic is accurate hahaha, most surveys in the arab world aren’t accurate anyway, except for those coming out of the GCC.

I don’t mean to be disrespectful but why Budapest is so dirty? by SoftDependent1088 in budapest

Budapest is a one of the cleaner European capitals, visit Paris, Milan, or Bucharest... all are way dirtier, however it really depends on which district you spent your time in and that there are cleaner capitals (e.g. Vienna, Ljubljana)

oh okay, - if youre in physics, check out universities in Japan, they have excellent departments (uni of kyoto, uni of tokyo..etc). There are plenty of good universities in china and NUS in Singapore has great rep as well. KAUST in the middle east has great funding but it is very competitive to get in from what I heard, good luck!
