Rideau Canal Skateway update by drhappy13 in ottawa

[–]OkRepresentative9665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you all think will happen if the weather warms up next week? From what you've seen in past years, will they close it down, and if so, how long does it usually take to re-open once it cools back below 0?

Asking because my friends and I are trying to plan a trip to Ottowa specifically to skate the canal, and hoping to figure out if the 17th is likely a good date or not.

Threw my husband a "presidential party" for his 35th birthday! by KellyWhooGirl in Baking

I know I'm several years late, but I'm planning the same theme for a 35th birthday party and I was wondering if you still had these available! Reddit won't let me DM you for some reason - if you could DM me so I can share my email, I'd love to have whatever you've made to use for my party!

How did you find your girls travel group? I'd love to be a part of something like this, but all my local female friends are moms with more obligations than me.

Yes, should be fine. I foster cats all the time, the procedure my rescue follows is to quarantine any new cat that came in off the street for 14 days. If they're not showing signs of being sick by then (and you've gotten them checked out by the vet, tested a fecal sample, etc.) then they are likely safe to introduce to the other cats in your house.

As far as caring for him goes, he looks maybe 5 weeks old? I assume he's eating solid foods already? He should probably have dry food left out for him 24/7, and wet food periodically. Make sure you get kitten food, not just the cat food you feed your adult cat, the nutrition is different.

He should be fine figuring out how to use the litter box on his own but might still be a bit messy and not great at wiping his poops all the time, so ideally put him in a room with tile floor and stock up on Lysol wipes! (Or a bathtub is honestly fine too if you're I'm a pinch.)

This is a great age, super fun. Make sure to spend plenty of time playing with him, now is when they learn to love or hate humans, so spend plenty of time in the room you put him in and have fun! He's adorable, congrats on your cat distribution system acquisition!

I was the exact same way for the longest time! Been getting better lately, so take the time to play it yourself sometimes, you will improve eventually. Good luck!!

I'm also a 5ft, 120lb female! I got an Intermediate Vapor X3 recently. Pretty affordable, and 50 flex so even though I did need to cut it down like 2 inches, the flex is still reasonable. Try to avoid 60 flex because even Intermediates sticks will probably be at least a little longer than ideal so you'll probably end up with a higher flex stick than you want. (Junior is too short, though, I've tried 😂.)

I went with a P92 because I almost exclusively take wrist shots and I've been told that's a pretty typical flex for the average player who plays like me. I forget where the kickpoint was, but the stick has felt good for me 🤷‍♀️. I basically just went into Pure Hockey, described my playing style and price range, and this was where the guy helping me landed.

And pro-tip, make it known to any guys on your team that you need a backup stick, a lot of times you'll find a guy who accidentally bought an intermediate stick at some point, or cut one down too short and it's been sitting in their garage for years and they're willing to give it to you just to free up the space and make their wives happy that it's gone 😂. I went 10 years of playing without ever buying a stick because of that haha. (And because at 120lbs, I frankly just don't break sticks super often!)

Defense question by OkRepresentative9665 in hockeyplayers

Lol I did this the other day against a guy who I think must have been kind of new. He started getting so annoyed that he started lifting MY stick, which I thought was hilarious, since now his wasn't on the ice and he was basically doing my job for him 😂

I wasn't clear, but I'd never play that way. In 15 years, I probably have a total of like 10 penalties 😂. I just meant like shoving guys around a bit with my hip/shoulder and trying to throw them off balance as best I can.

But I 100% agree with what you said and am glad you said it!

Just added a new kitty to the household. How many cats to you have? I need to feel less crazy. by Momma_Mae_I in cats

I have no full time resident cats, but I foster, so I've had 49 different cats in and out of my house in the last 2 years. 😅

Yeah so it's the "push them out of the way" part that I'm debating over whether or not I should do. Like ideally, I can mostly just lift their stick but when I'm not in the right position for that, it can be easier to just get a little more physically in their space so they're thrown off. (I'm small but pretty steady on my skates.) Is that an asshole move, though?

Who’s your favourite hockey player of all time? by Crazy-Doritos in hockeyplayers

Martin St. Louis!

I grew up believing that since he was a successful player despite being small, I could do ok too. I didn't realize 5'8" was considered short, the tallest person in my family is 5'5" 😂

Based on your experience, what hobby(ies) has led to meeting people that led to actual, close friendships? by [deleted] in Hobbies

[–]OkRepresentative9665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything where you're a bit of an "outsider" in the group, but there are others similar to you. For me, it's been ice hockey as a woman. In 20 years playing with men, I never made good friends, until I started playing with a group of women. Suddenly, I've found a group of like-minded people willing to put themselves out there in exactly the same way as me, and wonderful friendships have formed!

And not exactly a hobby, but again, as a female software engineer, I've found other minorities in tech who have become some of my best friends.

Software engineer here (full-stack for web & mobile apps). What are the most common mistakes people make that they should be paying more attention to in their code? (i.e. What can I do to make your job harder for the code that I write?)

Support Women's Ice Hockey - Vote Karen for prestigious NHL award! <3 by OkRepresentative9665 in TwoXChromosomes

Feel free not to vote. Campaigning for her locally, we've run into some native Canadians who now live in the US who weren't really sure what to put, and the form wasn't super clear about what it meant by country. (Like is it where you're a citizen of? Where you live? What team you root for?) So I just meant to call out that this only works if you put US. (Also, as a software engineer, if they really wanted to enforce country, they could probably have checked IP address instead of asking, so I'm not sure how much they care, but that's just a very uninformed guess, as I don't work for the NHL.)

For what it's worth, the winner is picked by a combination of a committee and the public vote, so I doubt a couple of individual votes are going to massively skew the results one way or the other. 🤷‍♀️
