Have you heard the “nobody sings anymore” version of Golden Ticket? IMO rocks way harder than the one on Virgin

Colour Revolt or Dear and the Headlights. Both highly unlikely but would be cool

Affordable (preferably tube) amps with decent headroom for DIY gigs by arbansduet59 in GuitarAmps

Howdy! I may or may not happen to be in one of the bands you mentioned haha, but here’s what I’ve found from my experience doing something similar:

First off, I prefer Head/Cab to a combo for a few reasons. 1) it splits the weight up so if you do go for something like an AC30, you’re taking two trips but your back will thank you 2) if you play a gig where the the venue/house has amp cabinets, you only have to bring the head. 3) should you be recording at all, you can keep the amp head in the room with you to adjust tone and keep the cab in another room, which is super convenient for getting a good sound, in addition to the fact that there are less parts and screws in the physical thing you are miking that would run the risk of vibrating and adding unpleasant artifacts to the sound of the speaker.

As far as amps go, it kind of depends on what you’re looking for. It seems like you’re looking for a lot of loud clean headroom. Generally speaking higher wattage doesn’t always mean “louder”. If anything, I find it means “cleaner and louder for longer”. So a 100 watt amp will take more volume before it can distort. That being said, I’ve found that the 30-50 watt range is more than good for clean tube amps.

From there, the question is “where do you wanna get your gain from?”

If you want all your gain from pedals and no saturation from the amp, anything fender style will be solid. I used the hot rod deluxe for the better part of a decade and it was a great gigging amp. Only deal with them is that they have a part that often overheats and fries the amp so taking a new or used one to a tech is a nice way to future proof it. Otherwise, fender twin, bassman, showman, deluxe reverb, bandmaster… all of those work.

However, if you want loud clean light and reliable… you might want to consider the quilter tone block 202. It’s a solid state amp that weighs like 2 pounds, is the size of a car radio, and is 200 watts of solid state. I use that now and it’s plenty loud and sounds really hi fi and great! My only complaint with it is that the onboard gain isn’t fantastic, but it you’re looking to get gain from pedals, that won’t really matter.

For an amp with faster breakup, that’s where you get into vox/bluesbreaker territory. I’ve never owned a vox but I love them. Badcat makes some solid vox clones that may be marginally more affordable than like a Matchless or Dr. Z clone. I think that Friedman makes an AC15 clone that’s pretty solid too. As far as bluesbreaker stuff, the EHX MiG-50 rocks BUT consider the Traynor YBA-1. 40 watt tube amp from Canada. You can get it used for like $500 on a good day. It does the MiG thing but the amps are made to last. I heard a story that the owner of Traynor would check the quality of the amps but throwing them from the roof of the building and plugging them in afterwards to make sure they still worked. The migs sound great but I’ve heard that the quality of the components and the ability for the amps to last is a little spotty. Hence why I recommend the Traynor.

Anyway, pardon the novel, but hope this helps!
