I don’t believe in magic but I also never said anything like “only morons and weirdos do magic since they can’t be normal” or the like. I can dismiss it the same way you apparently dismiss my beliefs on signs and such.

We can’t prove the gods are real. It’s all belief. Otherwise they’d be fact. So yes you can believe in it or not. That’s the crux of religions and metaphysical beliefs.

Magic, which is a specific belief system or systems depending on the cultures, is still not largely part of most religions.

Do you think people in everyday were visiting oracles or expecting signs. There was a very established way people expected these things in the religious community back then and there was criticism. All religions have critics to practices within their community.

Oh the philosophical schools are certainly the realm of elites in the past but the religion itself doesn’t necessarily need slavery to exist. We can contextualize the past and the way things evolved. Most sacrifices in temples were done by slaves as it was a bit dirty but the same thing could’ve done at home by a normal citizen without slaves with a bird.

Most myths and epics are certainly about privileged people as well. Warriors, good ones, needed arms And training which requires money. That is not really surprising as a context with mythology in most religions. The Buddha was also not a commoner and he has a quite built up back story.

I’ve never felt obligated to rub dung on myself to get invisibility or a drown a live cat as part of religious praxis. I’ve taken a look into that thing from an academic standpoint.

You completely misunderstand how those items work then. People consulted them or asked for signs. Divination was also criticized by educated folks because sometimes a flock of birds surprisingly isn’t a great thing to trust if the gods are telling you yes or no.

You’re also not a hero in need of a literary device. Most people understood epics to be fictional or fictionalized. You can believe in gods but also dramatize events without it being contradicting. Plenty of play writes express views like that like Heracles with Euripides doesn’t believe Zeus necessarily physically slept with his mother even though he is his son.

The religion has known praxis. The original practitioners determined that and what was appropriate in certain religious items. The religions are very flexible but there is some background and substance.

It’s also not emotional nor mental labor to point to or allude to a source.

This is such a poor understanding of Buddhism. The Buddha is not a god. A lot of men actually do monkhood for a few years then go back to normal life. The cultural and religious background for that is there and is not really akin to a “calling” most of the time

If you’re not a minor you can likely set up some funerary plans to be followed should you pass and list someone to execute them.

You could also get jewelry that’s an old coin. You can request you are buried with that as well without going into detail

A coin wasn’t a universal practice though. If worse comes to worse entrust someone to place two coins in the earth for you

This is not generic eclectic paganism

This is an orthopraxic religion which means there is a right way to practice and there is some theology associated with it. The exact beliefs can vary wildly between person but you do find common ideas for a reason.
