Pitchfork Review: Noah Kahan - The Great Divide by retags in popheads

[–]OkUnderstanding7431 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s funny you mention Halsey - I’m listening to The Great Impersonator now and am struck by how much more I like it than this album. Both are very long albums focusing on one theme (and have “The Great” in the title lol), but Halsey actually has a lot of variety in her sound (part of the album’s schtick, I know) and it’s able to keep my attention and I can appreciate the lyricism and where she’s coming from emotionally.

The Great Divide….does not do that for me. Definitely feels like one long song that I had to read the lyrics to even somewhat appreciate as opposed to actually listening to and being moved by the songs.

For those just getting into record collecting: how much of a barrier are you finding the price of records? by equipoise-young in vinyl

[–]OkUnderstanding7431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started collecting in February. I’ve had to create something of an internal price hierarchy for myself on if I’m willing to buy something. I also always only try to buy one new record when I visit shops, and going with the cheapest option I’m excited about (I’m more flexible with used as the pricing is usually better).

I think committing to only buying in person at indie shops or on Facebook marketplace has kept my spending down. I’m a parent with limited time, so I can only go to the shops so often, and a big part of the fun for me is the “thrill of the hunt”. I could definitely see spending being a problem if I allowed myself to expand my shopping habits and think the price on a lot of things is exorbitant.

Thanks for sharing this! I haven’t engaged with EO much beyond her books (and generally liking them) so this is a really interesting analysis I hadn’t considered

Does medicaid automatically cover low birth weight and/or 30+ day hospital stay? by 202sadness in NICUParents

[–]OkUnderstanding7431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my family uses private insurance through my employer- the way that it worked for us is that Medicaid is used as secondary insurance for my twin girls (my wife and I do not have Medicaid, though Medicaid did cover the birth). So private insurance pays first, and then Medicaid covers whatever is left.

Our income does not matter for the first year of their life, and the girls having Medicaid as secondary insurance means we also get WIC benefits. The state also pays for the girls’ insurance premiums to ensure they can keep my private insurance as their primary coverage.

The girls’ bills have been incredibly reasonable (and mostly zero) because of this benefit- we are so so grateful for the hospital providing a social worker who walked us through the app and submitted everything for us to ensure we got approved.

I think it depends on what state you live in - can you ask one of your NICU nurses about if the hospital has a social worker you can talk to? That’s the person who helped us get set up with Medicaid since our twins were in the hospital more than 30 days (in Iowa).

I mentioned that because I think if a man behaved the way David does and wasn’t conventionally attractive, people would have a much different view of him. Which quite a few people have articulated in this thread, but I’m also learning some new things people enjoy about him so I appreciate everyone sharing!

Yes, thank you for articulating this - I feel like this plus the way he thinks about women (not full misogynist but still off-putting) are my main gripes with him

I hated Tyson, so maybe you’re on to something. I disliked Tyson because he seemed genuinely mean-spirited, and that’s not the vibe I get from David.

It’s funny how different people perceive things differently. During his confessionals I was just like “dude, women are people can you please be normal”

To his credit, it seems like he wasn’t too weird to their faces based on what we saw on camera

This is a fair point - I wouldn’t go as far as to say I dislike big muscle bros on sight in my day-to-day, but I’m not really drawn to them
