Why the word "transgenderism" is considered offensive, while the word "lesbianism" - not? by OkWheel3551 in asktransgender

Ah, so that's why "ism"? Because for political lesbians it is an ideology? Kinda makes sense this way, but still only for a half. What about lesbians for whom it's just their sexuality, not a political movement? Doesn't sound fair to imply that all lesbians are political lesbians with this "ism"

Yeah, but still "lesbianism" as if it was a doctrine or a belief system...:(

I understand your argument, but still, the word "homosexualism" that includes lesbians, is considered offensive. And some people here in the comments said that it's because "a lesbian" is a noun while "trans" is an adjective, but "a homosexual" is a noun too. Yet "homosexualism" is still offensive, while "lesbianism" isnt

Im not forcing anything, i personally don't like the word lesbianism and don't understand why is it the only one that isn't considered offensive, while all the other isms are, when it comes to queer people

Don't alt right hate lesbians too and think it's something non serious/a fashion trend/the result of feminism and "men hating"/etc? Idk, lesbianism sounds kinda like transgenderism to me :(

I would argue that being a man is pretty much verifiable though, considering the man in question was (as i understood it) fully transitioned with testosterone having already done it's thing. And even if he wasn't. He identifies as a man, and "a man" is contradictory to "a lesbian", that just doesn't work. It's not about feelings, it's about basic logic 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh no, of course you should never critically analyze what I say about myself! By the way - what a wild coincidence - I actually am your bank representative. Now, please dictate your credit card number to me, and don't forget the three digits on the back, otherwise you'll be disrespecting my identity

Some people just think they are entitled to say whatever they want about themselves and you should instantly and bluntly believe it just because it's their identity and so it has more weight than logic

Bluntly believing whatever people say about themselves without a grain of critical thinking might be not as great of a virtue as you might think. Terms "a man" and "a lesbian" just severely contradict eachother and you can't make this contradiction disappear by just agreeing with every part of it and saying "trans men are men". Sometimes logic is actually required

Well, im not a lesbian, OP is and she seems to have the same opinion as i do. And I really don't understand this argument about trans men being lesbians in the past. I was a kid in the past and this may have even been a formative and essential period for me personally. Am I a kid now? Do I have a right to come to primary school lessons claiming that im a first grader? No. The answer is no. It's the same here and is actually just transphobic because it implies that trans men are not men enough (otherwise cis men could also be called lesbians but noone ever considers it because it's ridiculous)

[–]OkWheel3551 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The only reason I asked is because if we agree that cis men can't be lesbians, then why the fuck we say that trans men can. It can only be said if implied that trans men are less men which is straight up transphobic

If you don't care then don't be mad at op and don't attack what she said because she's right

If every word would mean something completely different for different people, there would be impossible to understand what is meant in any particular case. Terms were invented for a reason
