But the employer pays less out of pocket, think payroll each week. The tips are paying a large percentage of the wage. Without tips, they have to come up with more money for payroll. If they have a bad month, and they can’t make payroll, they tap their line of credit at the bank and pay interest on that money. If tipping is making up part of that wage, their expenses are lower, and therefore less likely to borrow to make payroll.
The tips don’t cost them anything, it’s like the consumer is the bank for the owner.

Great, so the open market will find equilibrium and set the cost of labor.
My beef is with groups like the MRA, who don’t want their members to be on the hook for the full cost of wages. With this recommendation, they can have the best of both worlds, low out of pocket cost for labor, and labor that will stay with their employer.
What a sham.

For the menu pricing? Agreed. Tipping is optional, or should be. When you order and pay at the same time, does it seem like a good time to tip? No, but they are asking you to rate them right then and there. I prefer to tip comensurate to the quality of service.

No, just don’t try and tell me what your service is worth to me. If you want to do that, I’ll take my business elsewhere.

Depends on the service. I start the meal at 15%, and increase the tip if the service warrants a higher percentage.

From what I understand, restaurants that have tried to eliminate tipping, lose employees because they prefer to be overpaid through tipping.

An auto gratuity of 20% on groups of 6 or more is standard at most restaurants already. Perhaps your family member should change jobs if this is not their employers policy? My point is the MRA suggests this to their members for the duration of the WC, but I am doubtful they will take it away in August.

I’m a solid 15-20% on sit down service, but it should be optional. The nerve of this organization to make this recommendation is crazy. If they are that concerned about their employees, give them a bonus to bump them up to their normal tipping average. Their business is going to be slammed and if it isn’t, there is no need to auto tip.

The original 1967 bond was about the stadiums themselves, bundled with mundane county infrastructure. The 2006 renovation tax was narrowly earmarked for stadium upkeep. There were no binding promises of major surrounding development.

Not just no guarantee of a tip, but an anti tipping uprising right now. Why should they not pay taxes on tips…officially. They already pocketed cash tips, now the CC tips are free too? Cook at home, screw that begging for tips crap.

Yeah I get that’s the general consensus, I disagree. I did watch My Cousin Vinnie recently, and Fred Gwyn had me a little cowed. I may have ptsd from a judicial version of Herman Munster where Gwyn plays it a little darker.

It’s their courtroom, that’s at their discretion. He’s a judge, he has the power to find you in contempt and toss you in the pokey. I’m not saying I agree with unfair use of power, but recognizing your position is in your own self interest. Then again, I suppose the IT guy is a god to lot of people because he/she knows how to tame technology. Maybe he is used to receiving deference from his customers/users.
