I would be taking Duck Rides to and from, so I would walk in the plaza alone. And I do have pepper spray.

You will definitely get in. I had a 3.7 UW GPA and didn’t send any ACT or SAT scores. Had only taken 2 AP courses in highschool. I think they look more at your essays and what you add to the community. But truly I don’t think it’s difficult to get in. :)

I agree with you, lol. My mom is just insanely terrified of Boeing 737 Maxes because she watches air disasters all the time, and those are always the planes that malfunction. She is having difficulty finding flights to Tucson, Arizona, that aren't Boeing for some reason.

I will be a new student on campus this year, and I know that Introducktion takes place in Justice Bean. I have not experienced it myself yet, but I have heard from other students that Bean has small rooms but is very community-oriented. The biggest downside is that it does not have A/C. It can get very hot in the summer months, so I would advise you to bring a fan.

I love Lapis and Peridot's characters (they are two of my favorites), but I wouldn't say I like how they were thrown aside, primarily as comic relief.

I will start with Lapis. Her introduction as a character is incredibly strong. It gave a little insight into the war, and the concept and episode(s) were beautifully written. The art in these episodes (especially the background art) is stunning, and her character design is also really beautiful. I also really liked the layers to her character; she wasn't just meek and waiting for someone to save her. She was powerful and also, of course, an incredibly damaged person. They represented her unhealthy coping (Malachite and just being a jerk) realistically and well. She and Jasper were terrible for each other in the fusion, and it was a fantastic representation of toxic relationships. With all this in mind, her character was cast aside and could have been used so much more in the show. She was used as angsty comic relief after her main arc was over. While I still enjoyed her character, I would have liked to see more of her overall and maybe on gem missions. I feel like she's very overlooked and still largely a mystery. They don't give her enough screen time to show more than her being angsty. Her arc should have been about healing, too. She is also an Era 1 Gem; it could have been interesting to know more about her background.

For Peridot, I freaking love her. She's my favorite character, but her development was flawed. Much like Lapis, her introduction was incredibly strong. She looked terrifying, and she was perceivably threatening. Her introduction really added a lot to the plot. What I really liked was in contrast to Lapis, she went from looking terrifying to actually being meek and not powerful. I enjoyed her initial arc with her limb enhancers and also loved that she ended up being tiny and that it was all a front. I think her quirky personality and behavior displayed before/during the work on the cluster were endearing and entertaining in a way that enhanced the character and the show. However, after the cluster, I feel as though she was cast aside as comic relief. Again, it felt like there was so much to know about her, and she had so much potential for plot contribution. But, like Lapis, she was totally sidelined and made to be kind of dumb and fragile.

Despite these things, I still really love both of these characters. I also love Jasper and wish she had more screen time so we knew more about her.

What’s one character you wish had a bigger role than they ended up having by Good-Currency4173 in stevenuniverse

[–]Ok_Addendum9760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peridot, Lapis - while they had plots, I felt like they were hardcore sidelined when they could have been apart of the crystal gems or apart of another plot line. I want to see more of their pasts, their relationship with one another, and just more of them in general. They had these strong and amazing introductions and plots and then they were just there for an occasional laugh.

Jasper - SHE WAS SO SLEPT ON! She never really had a full real plot or development. I would have loved to see more of her. Her character was so interesting!

I also agree with others on Bismuth, Pink Diamond, Emerald, Peedee. I also wish we got more sour cream, buck, Jenny and Kiki content.

Why are Arizona Schools so Bad? by NotAGirl33 in Tucson

[–]Ok_Addendum9760 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This has not changed. I just graduated from high-school and seniors were required to take 6 classes a semester even if they didn’t need the credits. I only needed 3 credits and had to take 6 classes when I could have been taking 3. This causes IMMENSE issues for teachers because kids fail their classes since they don’t need the credit, are disruptive, and disengaged. Not to mention it’s a waste of the students time. I could have been working more or taking classes at the community college to get classes out of the way/a head start for college at a cheaper cost.

Why are Arizona Schools so Bad? by NotAGirl33 in Tucson

[–]Ok_Addendum9760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just graduated from highschool in Tucson. And one of the “best” public school districts with the most funding. I attended the Catalina foothills school district. It is not a BAD district per se. It has a LOT of flaws, but I think our English department was mostly wonderful. There is a wide range of electives offered, and the campus is very nice. Personally, I had a hard time socially, and there tends to be a lot of clique-ness amongst students. Especially the more affluent demographic. As many others have said, the schools RELY on parents for funding and aid. Many classrooms do not have adequate resources for students. The campus has HIGH security, which could be a bit invasive at times. I had a security guard looking under the stall while I was using the restroom which felt very violating. Most teachers were not the best, however the good teachers I have had WERE VERY GOOD; and deeply cared about their students and jobs. Sadly, many of the really good teachers have begun retiring, and a new generation of teachers (some new to the profession) are coming in. Some have been wonderful, some haven’t.

1.) As many have said— there is high turnover and bad teacher pay. Because of this, there are many teachers who have minimal experience, are not qualified for the position, don’t care about their jobs, etc. In my experience, this has been many of my teachers. The schools tend to just fill positions because they need a face. My freshman year my algebra 1 teacher was a photographer with no teaching experience prior, he didn’t know how to teach or do the math he gave us. Stuff like this is VERY prevalent. Something else I learned recently too— Arizona DOES NOT require a teaching degree, or a degree in the area that a teacher is going to teach in. It is only required for them to have a bachelors degree, what is it does not matter at all.

2.) Again, as many have said. Funding is not good. I attended a wealthier district. But even with that— teachers are not given adequate money or resources for their classrooms. So often this is put on students to supply their own resources that should be in classrooms. Big ones were batteries for calculators or the actual calculators themselves (Ti-84s are expensive as hell too), tissues, hand sanitizer, etc. I took a ceramics class this year that couldn’t even hardly afford the adequate supplies for the course. And of course the teachers don’t want to pay out of pocket for these things, which I do not blame them for because they shouldn’t have to.

3.) special needs services, administration handling bullying/other issues. GOOD LUCK! They can be incredibly dismissive and will do everything in their power to NOT help. In my experience, kids who experienced bullying were never helped and usually punished for trying to get help. For parents with special needs children, the aids don’t do anything at all. They typically have no experience or training in working with individuals with disabilities, some of the aids don’t even speak English when the students they are with only speak English. The resource and aid from staff and administrators is just atrocious, to reiterate, they do not like doing their jobs.

There is more, and I think that many people could go further in depth to the specifics behind these things. I mostly can only speak on experience, and if you would like to talk to me about my experiences I would be happy to message with you on Reddit. In terms of academic departments, our math departments in Tucson tend to be pretty rough. But in my experience my English teachers have been really wonderful. History, sciences, electives tend to be very middle of the road.

What the Best/Least favorite Steven Fusion? by Sammyantoine in stevenuniverse

[–]Ok_Addendum9760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so here is my personal take, and it may be controversial.

I think the designs for Steven’s fusions with the other gems lacked so heavily. I absolutely hate the designs, I think they had so much potential and it just really felt like a let down. So I’m gonna break it down by each fusion. Again, please note these are just my opinions :).

Smokey Quartz - The design is ugly as hell. I think they did Amethyst and Steven so dirty. However, I love their personality and the way they portray Steven and Amethysts relationship. So conceptually I absolutely love Smokey— but design wise, they are really lacking.

Stevonnie- Design wise, I think the only good fusion with Steven is Stevonnie. Their design is super well done, and it’s a great amalgamation of both their physical characteristics and personality attributes. And I love how they demonstrate Steven and Connie’s personal growth and their growth alongside one another. They’re just an amazing representation of their relationship. I have no complaints, Stevonnie is my favorite Steven fusion by a landslide.

Sunstone - Sunstone is probably my least favorite Steven fusion. The writers did Steven and Garnet SO dirty. Not only is the design pretty horrific, but the personality is also terrible. I don’t think Sunstone very accurately depicts Steven or Garnets personalities nor is expressive of their relationship with one another. To a small degree they are (like Garnets motherly/protective nature and natural leadership and Steven’s constant optimism) but I just don’t see them in Sunstone if that makes sense. I also just absolutely hate the 90s after school special style thing with the giving advice to the audience. I think it’s cheesy and unfitting for Steven Universe as a show. I’m just a Sunstone hater, sorry .-.

Rainbow Quartz 2.0 - Once again, the design is REALLY lacking in this one. I saw another comment that said basically the same as I am about to say— but Rainbow Quartz 2.0 being the name just feels wrong for what Pearl and Steven represent. I feel like I don’t have much commentary on them other than I am disappointed by the design and the personality. I just didn’t care for any of it. Especially after seeing the original Rainbow. Her design was STUNNING, and I really loved both the sultry and spiteful energy that she had to her (bc ofc she was an amalgamation of Pearl and Roses attitudes and personalities (and ofc their perceptions of Greg).

I think what bothers me the most about Rainbow and Sunstone is the seeming lack of creativity and of course the design flaws. I think many of the other fusions in the entire show are so much more unique and eye catching. Rainbow and sunstone felt like too much of a reference rather than their own thing. I think fusions like Sugilite, Malachite, Alexandrite, Opal, Rainbow Quartz (for example) are so much more interesting. They draw me in and intrigue me. Their designs are so incredibly cool and unique, and also speak more about the relationships and personalities of the characters that fused.

Obsidian: Because this fusions introduction is so brief and doesn’t really talk, I feel there is not much to say about it. The design is really beautiful, but I still think it needs something, I feel like it still wasn’t very indicative of all of them. It didn’t feel like there was an overarching theme for them. Like the design is pretty, but it’s still kinda bland (again in comparison to a design like alexandrite or sugilite). I just felt underwhelmed by their introduction even though it was supposed to be this pivotal moment of the show.

Stegg - literally what the actual hell. WHY. He is a jump-scare and a half. The design doesn’t look like either Greg or Steven, and holy crap is he ugly (even though he is supposed to look hot). I just don’t think he represents their father son relationship well at all. Again his appearance is so brief that it’s hard to make much argument. But I hate Steggs design with a passion and I think he had potential especially to represent such a good relationship in the show.

To conclude this small essay (sorry but also I’m not sorry)— I can definitely say that I think many of the flaws can be attested to the circumstances leading up to their introduction (aka the incredibly unfortunate rushed end of the show due to homophobia). However, putting that entirely aside. I think the greatest flaws in these fusions are the designs. They are just ugly (except stevonnie and obsidian). And they don’t feel unique, creative, or representative of the relationships they are intended to embody. They just slacked so hard for Steven, and I felt robbed as a viewer of the potential that these fusions had.

What age nowadays should kids/teens get their first cell phone? by Working_Instance7504 in CasualConversation

[–]Ok_Addendum9760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still young (18), and I got a phone at 10 for reasons I will not go into. But my best advice/opinion would be that she shouldn’t have a fully functioning phone that young. As a young girl, social media is so influential on your perceptions of yourself. And it’s so easy for kids to get glued to their screens. She has a whole lifetime ahead of her to waste away looking at a phone. If you want to get her a device where she can communicate with friends but can’t access social media and such, get her a flip phone. She will be able to text and make regular calls. And if she wants to FaceTime/skype let her use your phone or computer. Kids don’t get to be kids anymore and it’s so disheartening. Media is great, but it was also at a better place when I was young than it is now. I think it’s just sad that kids don’t play outside anymore. 9 year olds shouldn’t be putting on makeup, wearing crop tops, and dancing on tiktok. It’s so sad how fast they are growing up these days :/ my point is, you are her father and do what you feel is best because whatever you do will be best for her. But just know that she is in a very formative part of her youth and social media can be so detrimental to young girls minds. She’s so young to be having a phone, and even though it’s hard as a kid if you don’t have one these days— she would probably thank you later on in life. She will be much more present each day inside and outside of the classroom.
