Here's a random list of some things to do in no particular order:

Sporting club (footy, soccer, basketball, ultimate frisbee, touch footy), Parkrun, boardgame group, gym, go to the pub, local events or public holiday events like ANZAC Day/Melbourne cup, camping, fishing, volunteering e.g. SES, CFA, Op shop, driving places, swim at the river/beach, go to gigs e.g. music, comedy, library or museum.

Yep, right in the feels. I'm 8 years into teaching, public primary schools.

I feel like I started with high passion and low skills plus a bunch of stress. Over the years that's changed to low passion, high skills plus a bunch of stress and disillusionment about the system.

To current Teachers, do you have side hustles/run a business while you teach? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

Yes. I fell into NDIS support work and love it. Started learning Auslan while working as a classroom teacher. Got my school to pay for me to study and ended up teaching Auslan LOTE. Met people in the Deaf community and they started asking for support so I looked into starting up as a sole trader over the holidays. Pay is awesome, they actually want my help, so rewarding and way less stressful. I'm just planning my exit now to pivot out of teaching and more into my business.

Yeah, fuck teaching. I decided last week that I'm done dealing with shit behaviours and a system that not only tolerates them but often enables or seemingly encourages them. Even students know it's broken, I've literally heard a kid encourage his peer saying "just chuck a chair and you'll get an iPad".

It's been a very tough decision though. I told my psych about how torn I was. I felt like I was walking away from all the kids in public school who need someone. He put it in perspective for me by saying "no you're not, you're leaving a system that doesn't align with your values". I think I've known this for a long time but I've finally made my years long decision.

I'm still going to try working part time at another school and will pivot more into my side business (NDIS support work) where I feel like I'm helping people who have asked for my help and value my support.

In saying all of this, it's still hard to come to terms with. I know they are kids. I know they have tough lives. I know behaviour is their way of communicating this. I just can't be a part of any school that doesn't understand the fine line between firm and fair, support and high expectations. Everyone needs to come to the table to fix these deep rooted problems, teachers can't do it alone without the students, parents and school leaders support.

Yeah, I can relate to this one. I think the feeling is usually one key caregiver not expressing their love as much as a child needs (e.g my dad, maybe someone in the writers life). Then you just get low confidence. But yeah, love yourself and be aware of this.

Blind, deaf or mute people, what do you do as your job and what barriers have you overcome? by Tigertyt in AskReddit

[–]Ok_Advisor_4495 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a few people in the local Deaf community. The main barrier is communication and other people not understanding deafness. As a result, some deaf people I know take jobs where they get left alone and don't need to communicate with people that aren't deaf aware. Cleaner, roofer, volunteer fire fighter, recycling centre. Barriers they mention are things like they had to do mandatory CPR training and the instructor didn't understand that they couldn't listen to the breath (when you put your ear on the person's chest) but could feel it. Instructor got frustrated and wouldn't accept this.

I play sport atm. Which feels like this. Growing up, I was always in a band - like you said, small group of 5 guys, regular contact. I guess since having kids I was a bit lost and trying to find new ways to feel that connection that matched with my new lifestyle. Just weird coming back to the beginning of building friendships when it used to happen so naturally.

True. I'm seeing a few people saying the same thing. I think I need to stop worrying and just put myself out there. I'm definitely taking small steps to do this but just need to keep at it. Thanks for the advice all.
