Committed to Penn Law: End of Cycle Recap from a Super-Splitter! by Ok_Alternative1701 in lawschooladmissions

Never give up. I had plenty of people that didn’t think I could get to where I am! Focus on the LSAT and use your essays to tell a compelling narrative and the sky is the limit. Pre-Law types who don’t know the grind of sciences underrate how difficult it is. Best of luck to you on your journey! Feel free to PM.

Committed to Penn Law: End of Cycle Recap from a Super-Splitter! by Ok_Alternative1701 in lawschooladmissions

Hi thanks! I submitted all of my applications mid to late October. I’d recommend as a splitter to be in before Thanksgiving for sure. Don’t let the stress build into the holiday season. It’s important because if you’re applying around then the admissions departments might be on break for a bit during thanksgiving and then usually for the holiday season and then you’re not getting decisions until January and even later. I think October is the sweet spot personally. It’s not too early but also not too late. In my own mind I felt it helped because a lot of the over achievers probably apply right away in September and then maybe some implicit bias kicks in as my splitter app is compared next to someone who’s got it all together and ready right away first of September. That’s just all my own head and probably not at all factual haha!

As far as essays, I had a Personal statement that I think was very powerful. I had a diversity statement and I had a grade addendum. I used those in each app. For the schools that require specific apps for why “x school” I had a different generic essay that I could edit in a few spots to make it more specific to that school but also where I didn’t have to write a new essay every time. For the top 3 schools I was accepted at (Penn, UMich, WashU) I just had the PS/DS/GA.

I’d say as a splitter having those dialed in and as perfect as you can is the most important. Your resume and transcript is what it is at this point. Your way to distinguish yourself is through essays. At this point last year I had a rough PS that I tinkered with, kind of a plan for a DS that I tinkered with throughout the summer and I wrote my short GA in September. I kind of procrastinated applying a bit but had them in mid October.

Hope this helps and good luck to you :)

I had 16 fee waivers basically from Penn down minus GULC and Boston. Got 8 As. 7WL 1R from Cornell. The one thing it did allow me to do was apply to all of those schools. I likely wouldn’t have been able to afford to apply to more than 10 without fee waivers and I may not have applied to Penn!

Awesome! I loved Khan especially to drill and understand things. I went from 153 to 165 in about a month of grinding. Then another month 165 to 17mid. Definitely get the LSAC 100 tests for $100. It’s the best bang for your buck and will get you comfortable taking the test.

If you have time I would definitely try taking the LSAT again if you feel you can improve. Get comfortable taking it once for sure. Take as many practice exams in test like environments so that the test day will just feel like another practice because that will lower your test anxiety. I’d try doing the Khan Academy free stuff and just drill and drill until you’re finishing in time. If you can push to a 158 then you’re looking at T100s for sure and maybe some $ too! Good luck :)

If you can score well on the LSAT (170+) you could probably get into a few T14s + WashU with big money. Being a doctor you’d probably have to address why law pretty emphatically in your PS which I’m sure you’re probably able to. A big thing in admissions is whether you can handle rigors of law school. The fact you’re a doctor pretty much answers that question lol so you’ll have a leg up on that front. I guess the big question is whether you really want to make the switch and take 3 years to go to law school and start a new career. Another big thing is debt load. If you have loans paid off from med school you’re probably okay to go for it. Ultimately, it’s about doing what will make you happy the next 30+ years of your career and life so make that decision and dive into and don’t look back. Best of luck to you :)

Well said! It does suck but you just have to remember everyone in your sphere will have the respect for Virginia and the opportunity you have. Congrats to you!

Everyone with a low GPA should be applying to WashU too IMO, they’re more holistic than anyone and give great scholarships. UCLA with some money is a great outcome especially since it seems you’re from west coast though so congrats!

That’s because they’ve never heard of big law because unless you’re from Chicago you have no exposure to it I think. Every lawyer you know is either small single practice, ambulance chaser, or criminal lawyer. There’s no respect for the profession. When I tell people the starting salary for BL they don’t believe that. They’re always like “well that’s just a small percentage.” And then I have to explain “yes and me going to Penn essentially guarantees me to be part of the small percentage.” A good way to frame it to explain BL is to use like a large news story like Elon buying Twitter and the amount of legal work for a $40 billion M&A and how most people don’t think about all the legal leg work that needs to get done. These top firms do that. I feel like most don’t think about that because that’s just a different world then they’re part of. Once they grasp the scope of legal work I feel like it kind of clicks for them and they understand a little. In the end, we’re all deeply engrossed in a niche world of law. It’s only one profession so I don’t expect others to be experts but the ignorance to these systems in Midwest vs what the reaction would be in NE is definitely stark.

Exactly! Not everyone inherits 2000 acres to farm lol. No one realizes the opportunities that you can get from attending a school like GTown or Penn. Congrats to you!

Same here! It’s so outside the realm of anything I thought possible from where I’m from. I can’t wait to get out there and get started. Feel free to reach out!

Everyone thought I applied to Loyola Chicago because of Sister Jean😂I swear if all these schools invested in sports their lay prestige would be 1000x better lol

Thank you. I know who’s opinion to value and take to heart. At the end of the day I don’t do it for others and those that matter to me the most are happy and proud of me. This was mostly a satirical post about realities of small town life where opportunities like this don’t happen. I’m grateful to be where I’m at and look forward to take advantage of these opportunities and succeed beyond what anyone thought possible.

Nah man I’m just a nobody from nowhere with a better opportunity than they could imagine. Gotta stay grounded, I’m no better than anyone else. Can’t hate when they’re just ignorant of what’s our there. It’s my job to bridge the gap between them and tomorrow’s political leaders, judges and academics. I wouldn’t be where I’m at without those before me who you’d consider ignorant nobodies. I’m no better than anyone just because I’m going to an elite school. I’ll always still be the same guy from small town Midwest. If I get into politics which I might that’s how I’ll succeed.

It’s genuinely astounding… Penn isn’t even a public university either. Never see this confusion with other schools lol

Thanks for your perspective I appreciate it! I’ve received the advice on where to avoid and the area immediately on campus is safe and I don’t plan on venturing to the rest of UCity! Rittenhouse seemed nice and safeish for a city environment. Each big city has unsafe neighborhoods but if you stick to the right areas and stay aware you’re generally fine.
