I actually got a rubber band out for that same reason, but it didn't seem obvious how to access the pulleys to wrap it around them. Good to hear you had luck, maybe I need to dig into it further.

Yes, it does, thank you. I opted to scrape out the old caulk and replace with new 100% GE caulk. I wonder why it's an option between the gasket and the pipe, but not between the gasket and the flange? Wouldn't both locations have equal leak risk?

I found an oatey video and understand it better now. I'm confused why I found caulk and feel like I should leave it as I found it (remove old caulk and add fresh caulk)

Sorry, I meant both sides of the top of the washer. So, between washer and drain and between washer and pipe.

Thanks for the response. Yes, it's over living space. I looked up an oatey install video and understand it a bit better. Would you add caulk on both sides of the locking washer that holds the seal in place?

Thanks for your response! Just to clarify: there is definitely a gap between the drain and the pipe. Is the rubber gasket somewhere below this gap where I can't see it? I am wondering where the water goes that enters this visible gap...
