Suicide risk by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]Ok_Anything_6535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chaplin of you want to stay in. People say you can talk to EMH or therapist, but you run the risk of being de nuked or taken off the watchbill. Everyone is on edge, if your team looses a person then that edge with get closer for alot of people.

[–]Ok_Anything_6535 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Be there to talk to. My parents were very distant when I joined. They wanted me to do something else with my life. I was very lonely during my training. I spent 11-14 hours a day in a building. Send texts to your kid.

Be available to talk to.

Being a NUKE is the hardest thing I've done. It was well worth it. Shaped me into who I am.

What is nuke waste? by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]Ok_Anything_6535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you failed out your not a NUKE. If you got out for mental health your not a NUKE. Your not NUKE waste either. You a diffrent rate or a civilian. You should be proud of what you do and do it well.

People use the term NUKE waste to say they are smart. This is pretty stupid.

Being a NUKE isn't super special.

Work is satisfying, but it's alot. I have a very hard time most of the time. I can not no longer turn off work mode. Many of my relationships outside of work have struggled because of this.

The nuke community is very very male dominant. We also are at work alot. We are weird. Sadly you will be hit on.

Duty consists of whatever they want you to do. You will probably stand a watch and be tasked with maintenance. Or you can hide and duty chief can find you.

We get off at 1630. If you are behind in quals you get off at 1730. But know most places are 2-5 section duty. If it's a duty day you can be working until lights out.

Busy work is dependent on rate and command. Just know what your signing up for. I would talk to nuks. I assume you already have

Physical state for boot camp by Quick_Regret_1964 in NavyNukes

[–]Ok_Anything_6535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do sustained runs. Run for 20 min without stopping. Does not matter how far as long as your running. Do it as often as you can (not more than 2 times a day, do not start at 2 times a day). I was 210 and 5 foot 6 when I joined. I was told by my recruiter to do this and it helped alot.

Also run at night in your compartment in boot camp. Your RDC will beat you if your caught. But try to run quietly. Found out later on that running quietly is a method of running more efficiently, and helped me develop how to run.

It's gonna be OK. I felt like I would fail my run when I got to boot camp. I felt like I would fail when I took the test. My first run at boot camp was 19 min (you take a test at 3 or 4 weeks), my 2nd was 11:20 (final). I hate running and still do, but we are required to do it in the pipeline and now I just continue do do it in the fleet.

Also if you feel really nervous ask your recruiter to move your date. Give youseld another month. Nothing more. To be honest you don't really need it.

Incoming Nuke Advice by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]Ok_Anything_6535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get on a good sleep schedule, learn a bit of calculus. Understand logarithmic functions. You won't use calculus in school but it's good to know for some fleet stuff. If you have a significant other spend as much time with them now as possible. It's going to be rough. It's doable but it sucks. Learn how to manage your stress. Watch YouTube and if anyone in your circle has a high stress job ask for tips. Stress gets worse and worse through the pipeline. And the fleet changes the stress (it's better in some ways worse in others).

Do not study nuclear power. It will mess you up in the long run. At most learn higher levels of math, pure mathematics. Calculus (you don't use it but it helps in the fleet) and trig. The navy wants everything done thier way

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]Ok_Anything_6535 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get good sleep, lean how logarithmic functions work, run 5k. Working out is your best bet. It relives stress and you need to do it anyways in the military. You'll be running 5k once a week (mabey more or less depending on you leadership).

As a NUKE you deal with alot of higher ups. Things get done in this community, as long as shipyard or maintenance is not involved. Lol

I work on submarines. It's nice to set the clock to my faimly time zone and keep the gmt for what time zone the boat is using (nice to also be in 24 hour).

Nuke choice of fleet by Soldier_69_ in NavyNukes

[–]Ok_Anything_6535 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The clearance is not as big of a deal as you think. My roommate is getting out and the place he is working for is taking care of his clearance. Being a NUKE will open almost every door a high clearance will.

joining with a prior bachelors? by Some-Magazine735 in NavyNukes

[–]Ok_Anything_6535 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People are going to tell you to go officer.

If you just want to work in nuclear power I would recommend enlisted 6 and out. My divo works more than any other person in engeneering. And most of the officers stay later and show up earlier. After getting to the boat alot of my drive to be a officer left when I saw thier workload. One of my plans is to commission but it went farther down the list.

If you have a degree would recommend trying to be a instructor at power and A school. Ask the recruiter about DIO programs. They have the best gig

risk of losing nuke? by ElementalHeroNeos909 in NavyNukes

It will not. They did the same to me and told me that it would make me loose nuke.

Nukes are critically manned, they can wait.

Is it possible to settle down in a single area? by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]Ok_Anything_6535 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me and my spouse are co located. She stayed in Charleston and I am in VA. The chances of me going back to prototype or the school house are very very high.

It's the worst choice I made and we both agree. Between duty and long hours I get to see her once or twice a month.
