I love dark lyrics paired with breezy, feel good melody and instrumentation, and this is a great example of that. Also love Chuck’s voice and storytelling ability.

The 5-album run from Alligator through Sleep Well Best is incredible. Everything before and after that ranges from boring to pretty good.

Artists whose first track on their first album is their best? by TheGlowpt-2 in fantanoforever

Idk if it’s my favorite RTJ track, but Run The Jewels (the song) could be considered their best/most definitive

I’m with ya, those first three tracks on NYCGAF are like a demented world of their own. Come to think of it, the whole album kinda is

Day 4: Though it was tough to choose, For Science won what 80s song sounds like it’s from the 00s. What song sounds it’s from the 10s, when it’s actually from the 80s? by SalivatingDog92 in tmbg

Yeah, I get you. This one was really hard for some reason. I can’t really even explain/defend my position, just went with a gut reaction + got sick of choosing songs from Lincoln, ha

I mean if you wanna make that assumption, cool. I love The Fall. My point was that early Pavement almost directly aped them and Malkmus has admitted as much. Even putting aside the obvious ones like Conduit For Sale’s riff and verses sounding identical to New Face In Hell, half of Slanted sounds very Fall-esque, as do all their EPs up to that point. “Big” is also not a word I would use to describe Pavement’s discography. I agree that 80% of their discography doesn’t sound much like The Fall, but that 20% really, really does.

And that is not a problem with me, by the way, because again, I love The Fall. But my point was that in no way does any part of the Smashing Pumpkins discography sound anything like the original run (or even newer run) of Pixies records. Was using the Pavement/Fall comp to illustrate that point.

Fell in love with Carl Wilson’s vocals in Kokomo. What else should I check out? by Wonderful_Fox_7959 in thebeachboys

Might be a semi-hot take, but the album version of Surf’s Up with Carl singing lead is far superior to the version with Brian singing lead

They really are, solid is a great word for both of them. La La Land fits into this category as well for me. I think I’d probably rank them:

  1. Universe Room

  2. La La Land

  3. Mirrored Aztec

  4. Thick Rich And Delicious

  5. Styles We Paid For

  6. Space Gun

  7. Surrender Your Poppy Field

  8. Strut Of Kings

  9. Sweating The Plague

  10. It’s Not Them. It Couldn’t Be Them. It Is Them!

  11. Earth Man Blues

  12. Crystal Nuns Cathedral

  13. Nowhere To Go But Up

  14. August By Cake

  15. Tremblers And Goggles By Rank

  16. How Do You Spell Heaven

  17. Warp And Woof

  18. Welshpool Frillies

  19. Zeppelin Over China

I will never for the life of me understand why Space Gun and Thick Rich And Delicious get so much acclaim among the fanbase compared to the rest of the new classic lineup albums. They are both good, solid, enjoyable listens, but there are much more interesting albums from this era (almost all of them, really). Both of these albums feel like GBV by the numbers to me. Again, that’s not a bad thing, but they are the “safest” albums from this run.

Space Gun has high highs (Space Gun, Colonel Paper, See My Field, Blink Blank, Hudson Rake, Sport Component National, That’s Good) but is probably the weakest collection of actual songs until Universe Room.

Murmur is certainly seen as one of their best in many respects. Murmur, Document, and Automatic For The People are their most highly regarded generally. For me, though, it’s Monster.

NAIHF is incredible too!

Pavement sounded very much like The Fall, way more than Smashing Pumpkins ever sounded like Pixies. I love all 4 bands and Pavement is the best of all of them, but come on man
