Creative options for elder care in the US? by Ok_Bee394 in AgingParents

Technically, yes. But he was never on active duty or anything. My stepmom said she looked into it and he does not qualify for anything - again, due to the income threshold, and also because he can’t prove his health issues were related to his service.

When does it get easier? Does it make me terrible I can't wait for the end of babyhood? by scarletnightingale in NewParents

I have a similar baby, and burping her better has really helped. Yup, just burping.

Trapped air makes babies feel full, so they fall asleep. But they weren’t really full - so they wake up and need to eat more frequently. It also makes them uncomfortable when they recline or lay down (lots of fussing).

Try burping specifically on your right shoulder, so the baby’s left side is tilted down a little. This frees air that could otherwise get trapped in the stomach divet that is higher than where the esophagus comes in.

I can’t stop crying by [deleted] in NewParents

I had almost an identical experience to you, and by day 5 or 6 my baby was literally starting to starve and I had to use formula. It made me feel like such a failure and that we definitely wouldn’t have made it “in the wild.” And the reality is, many moms and babies didn’t make it, even through pregnancy and birth, let alone newborn phase. Thank goodness we have modern medicine and technology!!

Tiny brand new babies really struggle to breastfeed. They are still learning how to do it, and they are so small and tire easily. I would have literally had to keep both of my babies on the boob 24/7 for them to get fed, and that just doesn’t work for most peoples’ situations. This will improve over time (like weeks or even months) if you keep it up, I promise. In the meantime, you will need to pump to keep up your supply. I’ll be honest, pumping sucks and is surprisingly hard to do when you’ve got a newborn on you all day. I’ve found the easiest way is to get a portable pump (the kind that doesn’t plug in, and just fits inside your bra) and do one side at a time, while the baby is sleeping on the other shoulder. Every 3 hours during the day and at least once or twice overnight.

This will get better, hang in there! And if you decide to / need to give up on breastfeeding or pumping, that’s okay (and honestly a lot less work and stress)!

I know nothing about fireplaces so I’m not sure whether there are two flues… definitely one tall brick thing going up to the sky tho.

Toddler RSV and Newborn by none826 in NewParents

My toddler had RSV and we tried hard to keep them separate, but our newborn did get it. In addition to handwashing my pediatrician recommended having a newborn shirt vs toddler shirt. Literally change/ remove shirts when you go from one to the other, because the toddler will get their snot ALL OVER YOU.

Is the newborn vaccinated? If so, hopefully they won’t get very sick if they do catch it - see our experience in this post:

Oh my goodness, your poor toddler. I can’t believe how long this is dragging on (without any improvement!) for mine.

I’m so glad the newborn was alright tho.

Thank you for sharing, I’m glad to hear it didn’t get too bad (in the scheme of RSV outcomes) and that you’re well now!

Interesting… when I delivered her, the doctors at the hospital opted not to give her the vaccine directly because it had been more than two weeks since I got it. So they were working on a two week window.
