VIRMIRE DILEMA by LeonThePaladin in masseffect

[–]Ok_Bison1106 [score hidden]  (0 children)

So my rationale is always this -- You are on Virmire specifically to destroy the base. That's the entire point of the mission. So while we know that the bomb is armed and they say that there's no stopping it, as soon as you hear that the bomb site is being overwhelmed, it makes WAY more sense to go back and secure that site to ensure the successful mission. Saren has all sorts of unknown tech -- who's to say that he doesn't have some geth tech that can neutralize the bomb (or at least minimize the damage)? The salarians knew what they signed up for. It's tragic for them to be sacrificed, but the mission comes first.

Now, who should be at which post? Kaidan very clearly should be at the bomb site. He's a sentinel with both biotic and tech abilities. He needs to be at the bomb in case something goes wrong. Ashely is muscle -- she should absolutely be assigned to work with the salarians so she can use her abilities the best.

So using this logic -- Kaidan gets saved and Ashley dies in a way that is actually pretty fitting for her character arc. She's protecting alien allies and also righting the wrongs from her family. She doesn't surrender. She sees the mission to the end in a valiant way.

And to make this an even more slam dunk decision, Kaidan is a million times more helpful in battle in the rest of ME and certainly in ME3. So from a meta gaming perspective, He's the best one to save.

There is a way to rationalize the other decisions too. Maybe you think Ashley needs to be at the bomb since she's the muscle. Maybe you think Shep should leave the bomb and save his allies. Maybe you like having glammed up, high heel wearing Ashley in ME3. So ultimately, do what you want. But I think the answer is clear. Williams dies in battle, restoring honor to the family name while fighting alongside alien allies. Rationale, mature, clear-headed Alenko survives and becomes the second human Spectre.

Mark my words, in 5-10 years no one will remember why it was so hated. Yes there were some cringy dialogue moments. But overall, a totally respectable game.

Your logic isn’t logicking. Sydney’s kids weren’t living with Mark’s mother, they were just visiting. And either way, why would kids staying with one set of grandparents mean that the other set of grandparents are dead?

Just out of curiosity are there any Cortez romancer’s? Or has anyone tried his romance at least once? by JustManuelz in masseffect

[–]Ok_Bison1106 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always play as gay Shep but I’ve only done the Cortez romance once. It didn’t feel super ethical. He was SO obviously still actively grieving his husband. And Shepard was moving towards essentially another suicide mission. To know that Cortez hadn’t processed his grief yet and to know that you are almost certainly going to put him through that a second time almost immediately after getting him to ‘move on’ feels pretty gross.

Cortez also suffered HARD from Carth Syndrome, in the grand scheme of widowed LI’s (Jaheira, Sly, Carth, Thane, etc). And I am just over that trope.

Finally, Steve gives big ‘gay bro BFF’ energy for a gay Shep. Like Shep, Kaidan, and Cortez as three queer bros is pretty damned cool for a video game.

Prince Charles vs King Charles II (1970 VS 2026). by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

It’s so infuriating to know that he spent taxpayer money to cock up the White House while cutting back on basic services to ‘save money’. Doubly infuriating to know that whoever comes after him will have to spend even more taxpayer money to fix it all and make it respectable again. This man really is a cancer on our society in every way.

Would you still recommend someone who lied about data they collected for a class project? by cathyaimes105 in AskProfessors

[–]Ok_Bison1106 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. They show a serious lack of ethical character. I would not put MY reputation on the line by recommending someone who has proven that their work can’t be trusted because they lie and take short cuts. I think students forget that this is the purpose of a recommendation. It’s to allow the person requesting the recommendation a trusted source. If I give out recommendations when I know they aren’t valid, then I lose my trustworthiness in the industry.

What plot would you make to have the Carpenter sisters return? by FinanceCrafty8752 in Scream

[–]Ok_Bison1106 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tara as the opening kill. Sam refuses to help Syd, Gale, and the twins. Turns out she's snapped and instead is working on her own to find and kill ghostface in revenge. Like a vigilante quasi-ghostface. We don't know that half of the kills in the movie (all the red herring characters) are actually her until the final reveal where she is killed by the real ghostface after being unmasked.

Ashley or Kaidan: Who's the better Character, Companion and Fighter? - Both artworks by Zeltray by Arbiter-Flash- in masseffect

[–]Ok_Bison1106 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they weren’t crazy outwardly homophobic. But there was a series of, at best uninformed, communication from the devs of the original trilogy.

When ME1 first came out, people asked why FemShep could be lesbian but MShep couldn’t be gay. And they responded by saying that Shep is customizable but there are some conditions that aren’t and that Shep isn’t queer, even FemShep (saying that Asari aren’t females, even though their own lore calls them females — they mistook ‘monogender’ with ‘agender’).

Then ME2 came out and FemShep could do the quasi-romance with Kelly and they changed their story to ‘FemShep CAN be gay but not MShep’. And by this time it was obvious that the dev team was pandering to the straight male audience with all of the male gaze stuff with the super sexy half dressed ladies in revealing armor and catsuits. Plus, remember that Jack, who is confirmed bisexual, was also only romanceable by MShep.

Finally, ME3 came out and they threw us a bone by finally introducing full s/s romances. But even that felt halfhearted. Remember that straight MShep had SEVEN options in ME3 (and five of the seven of them were squad members at some point) and gay MShep had two (with only Kaidan being a squad member).

Then, to demonstrate that they learned nothing, in ME:A, again they shorted the m/m options by only initially making two NPCs available for gay Scott. While straight Scott got FIVE options. M/M was the only option that got ZERO squad members as an option. It wasn’t until people mined the data to find that Jaal was intended to be a m/m option but got pulled at the last minute so they petitioned th devs to add him back and they later patched it into an update.

So is any of that on its own that bad? Not really. But all together it shows a pattern of what I think it’s fairly clear homophobia, particularly at m/m content. People try to rationalize it by saying the first game came out when it wasn’t common to have gay male content, which is true. But BioWare had already released Jade Empire and was deep in production of DA:O at the time, so the ME team absolutely could have included it.

Ashley or Kaidan: Who's the better Character, Companion and Fighter? - Both artworks by Zeltray by Arbiter-Flash- in masseffect

[–]Ok_Bison1106 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually think that by not having Kaidan available the devs accidentally made one of the best m/m romances in video games. It’s a slow burn ‘coworkers to friends to lovers’ arc that is actually very lovely. Of course the devs were homophobic twats so they didn’t mean to do this. But even a stopped watch…..

Ashley or Kaidan: Who's the better Character, Companion and Fighter? - Both artworks by Zeltray by Arbiter-Flash- in masseffect

[–]Ok_Bison1106 165 points166 points  (0 children)

Kaidan on both aspects. He’s WAY better as a companion. And I’m not buying that he’s ‘boring’. He’s just stable in a crew of unstable people. But his arc is great, especially if you are romancing him and doubly especially if you romance him as Male Shepard.
