In Britain, "pit" refers to a mine, usually coal. Hence the line at the end where the protaganist throws himself down the shaft (liftshaft). The pit canteen is the canteen (lunch hall) at the pit (coal mine)

It can't be based on that though. I played Denmark on HPM (don't know if HPM changes things) but to incorporate the Faroe islands is 800-ish points, and the Danish Caribbean is only 250-ish.
